Guerrilla Chikarticles: A Kirschner Original
By Jonathan Kirschner - August 6, 2008 | Email the author

Chikara makes some big announcements, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla announces four ASW7 matches, and I run down some possible teams for the 2008 La Loteria Letal.

Chikara News as of Wednesday July 6th 2008

September 6th, 2008 will mark the return of the infamous Battlebowl. For those of you who aren’t familiar with WCW’s past Battlebowls, the rules are simple:

- There will be a total of nine teams in the 2008 La Loteria Letal (Battlebowl). Eighteen Chikara roster members will be randomly assigned a tag team partner. For example, there is a (slight) chance you will see two rivals like Brodie Lee and Claudio Castagnoli teaming together.

- There will be four qualifying two vs. two matches. The winners of each qualifying match will have earned their spot in the main-event: The Battlebowl, a battle royal consisting of the four winning tag teams.

- Now, Chikara has put an interesting little twist on this. In the old WCW days, there were 8 qualifying matches leading to eight teams wrestling in the Battlebowl. Chikara has eighteen wrestlers, which means nine teams. So it’s safe to assume that one team will receive a bye into the Battlebowl.

- The main-event Battlebowl isn’t about teamwork. Not at all. There can only be one victor in the Battlebowl. It’s every man for himself.

Three big matches have been announced for Vanity and Violence. Worker Ant looks like he’s next in line for a mask beating. Jimmy Olsen will try his hardest to expose this Ant. Will Worker Ant be able to derail him? Or will he be just another victim? (Tazz Reference)

The Order of the Neo Solar Temple is three once again as Ultramantis has announced their newest member. Replacing Hydra will be none other than Dr. Cube of Kaiju Big Battel fame. The Order of the Neo Solar Temple will be up against a rather unique trio: Mike Quackenbush, Tim Donst and Hydra. Or as I like to call them, The QuackenDonsters.

We will see the clashing of two tag teams who have been on quite the decline as of late, Super Smash Brothers and Team FIST. It’s been a while since Icarus and Akuma have teamed up without Chuck Taylor. Let’s see if they can still prove why they hold the record for the longest reign as Campeones de Parejas.

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla News as of Wednesday July 6th 2008

Matches have finally been announced for All Star Weekend 7! Two matches have been announced for Night One, and two matches have been announced for Night Two. On Night One we will see Alex Kozlov make his PWG return against another man who is making a long awaited return, Rocky Romero.

The next match is going to be a disappointment to some and a treat to others. Chuck Taylor will make his Pro Wrestling Guerrilla debut against an extremely unexpected opponent. “Listen, you guys are creative. Think outside the box. I want to face the best Pro Wrestling Guerrilla has to offer. Just not the best dude.” He is set to face the best broad PWG has to offer, Candice LaRae.

Kozlov will come back for Night Two and face Dragon Gate up and comer Susumu Yokosuka. Night Two will also see Chris Hero defend his PWG World Title against “The Man That Gravity Forgot” PAC.

The Closer: La Loteria Letal Tag Team Predictions

I decided to take it upon myself to make some tag teams for the 2008 La Loteria Letal. Though the people who consist them are very real, these tag teams are 100% fictional. I’m going to present five teams today, and four more next week.

Vin Gerard and Jimmy Olsen
The last time these two men were in the ring was when they were fighting each other for one of Chikara’s Anniversary shows in May 2008. Vin Gerard came out the victor in that match and since then, Jimmy has been on quite the rampage. He’s ripped off both Ultimo Breakfast and Lince Dorado’s masks. I think this mask-ripping rampage is more than meets the eye, there has to be something fishy going on between Vin and Jimmy. These two would work together diabolically as a tag team. If Vinny and Jimmy are to make it to the Battlebowl in real life, there’s going to be a hell of a lot of masks flying in the air.

Brodie Lee and Buck Hawke
I know it’s hard to believe I randomly picked these two to be partners, but it is what it is. Brodie Lee attempted to help Buck and Mitch win the titles back in July, but Bryce sent Brodie to the back putting a stop to any tricks he had up his wristband. Buck is used to tagging with a fellow “fabulous” team member, but Brodie isn’t so “fabulous”. He’s a grimy, dirty truck driver. I’m sure Buck will manage to put all differences aside and use Brodie any way he can to cheat his way to the Battlebowl.

Chuck Taylor and Mike Quackenbush
I’m not quite sure how these two opposites would work together. It’d only be a matter of time before Taylor annoys Quack to the point where Quack will slap on the Chikara Special on his own teammate.

Tim Donst and Mitch Ryder
This would be a very interesting mix. Tim Donst is a much disciplined young kid with an amateur wrestling background. Therefore, a good amount of his offense is based on various wrestling slams and submissions. On the other hand, Ryder has an old-school Memphis offense. I think it’s safe to make a bet he doesn’t have much amateur wrestling in his arsenal. Donst COULD be the yin to Ryder’s yang.

Ultramantis Black and Hydra
Maybe this whole random lottery pick thing isn’t so bad after all. Last time we saw these two men in the ring together was at Tragedy and Triumph when ‘Mantis was beating Hydra like a rag-doll. Despite such desire to do so, he would have to hold it all back if he wants anything to do with the Battlebowl. If Hydra makes it to the Battlebowl, I can’t picture how anyone is going to be able to throw him out.

  1. According to the Chikara website the eight teams will be drawn from the list of 1 and the last 2 will face each other in a 1 on 1 match.
