And now that it's been announced, I can't wait to read your reaction to Saito being announced as the next GHC contender. First Yone, now Saito at the Budokan.

I have no idea what you've been watching. A lot of big NOAH matches go long and are very boring in the middle, but others are consistent. I can make recommendations for various wrestlers if you like.

See, now I tend to love the finishes. The finishes and the openings. But the working over just feels dull most of the time. It feels like it's not going anywhere.

I can't speak for Ditch, but it's the booking that is dull, and even more often counter-productive. They put together legitimately promising things like the Sugiura/Marufuji championship team, then hot potato the tag belts to something much less deserving. Those guys who do get big wins to start off something huge, like Marufuji pinning Akiyama or Morishima pinning Misawa, can come too late or don't get followed up as well as they might. The end result is that veterans remain at the top of the heap and younger guys sink. NOAH has a scary overreliance on their veterans, the dangers of which have been made even more apparent with Misawa's utterly poor performances as champion and Kobashi coming back from cancer only to be injured again. There isn't much progress to the company, which I think warrants Ditch's "glacial" comment.

In the ring it's a mixed bag, but it is another culture's take on professional wrestling and they often are more methodical, even if they are more likely to hit what would be overkill in America in terms of their endings of main events. Some stuff, like the SEM elimination match, Kobashi/KENTA Vs. Sasaki/Nakajima, Briscoes Vs. Ibushi/Nakajima and Sugiura Vs. Morishima, I certainly couldn't call dull. It's some of the best stuff I've seen all year from any company.

Wait, so they ARE being dull? I got introduced to a lot of the NOAH guys through ROH and bought some DVDs. And while I liked what I saw, I thought the matches were kind of dull. I thought Japan just handled things differently. I just can't get into Japanese stuff as much as American. But that might have more to do with me watching Best Ofs and not speaking Japanese.

Steventon,

They gave Marufuji the belt 2 years ago. He and KENTA are too obviously 'juniors' for that role. I think Go has the talent (and then some), but needs more intensity.

John,

"Is it bad"? Heck no, it's good.

As far as writing more about the young guys, I've written about them a lot over the years: Morishima's push in '07-'08, Rikio's botched reign, Marufuji's reign, Go's potential, etc. Honestly, nothing's changed. There needs to be something, preferably a generation war, that gets things moving in a discernable direction to provide continuity and elevate the young stars. NOAH has all the talent they need to tear things up at Budokan Hall and sell it out, but the product is so dull and glacial. The lack of effort is what gets me, I don't think I've seen anything quite like it.

I love these Kobashi columns. Is it bad that I don't have to follow any of the links thanks to memory of the matches? And while the Kobashi return tag wasn't my match the year, gosh, it was magic.

I'm like to second Steventon's question about elevating the youngsters. In fact, have you considered ever writing a column purely evaluating NOAH's favorite younger guys (Morishima included) in terms of talent and who could carry the company?

Good read as always Ditch. I can't understand Akiyama's logic of booking himself to look like a mid-card for life jobber, but pushing SAITO to the main event. Do you think they should pull the trigger on any of the youngsters (KENTA, 'Fuji, Go) any time soon and elavate them to main event stars?
