Quite frankly, alongside Shawn Michaels, The Rock is my favorite professional wrestler. No man could quite so electrify a crowd, quite so bring millions of people to their feet, or quite so get those millions… and millions of people to chant his name simply by tilting his head to the side and wishing it so.

Born into a family of professional wrestlers, The Rock had plenty of time to learn the business. I think my favorite story of The Rock as a kid was that of the time he gave a piledriver to a fellow student in order to prove that professional wrestling was indeed real.

Originally born in Hayward, California, as a young boy and man, The Rock had already been accoustomed to traveling across the globe, living in places such as Auckland, New Zealand, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He joined the family business in 1995, being trained by his reluctant father. With help from Pat Patterson, The Rock had several try out matches before being signed for a short period to Jerry Lawler’s United States Wrestling Association, wrestling under the name “Flex Kavana”.

The Rock made his debut in the WWF under the name “Rocky Maivia” only to have the fans completely turn on him with “Die Rocky Die!” chants. God I loved those. I still remember being in awe at how much the crowd hated Rocky and how he just kept smiling at them like an idiot. It still makes me grin. It wasn’t until The Rock turned heel, joining the Nation of Domination, that he finally came into his own. His promo work was getting better day by day and I personally always enjoyed his work a lot more than that of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin (who seemed to just say the stuff again and again). Yes, The Rock did repeat himself and his catch phrases, but he did a lot of funny and unique changes that still remain memorable today. In fact I still believe that without The Rock, there would be no “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. Rocky was the perfect foil for Austin to play against and they complemented each other perfectly. Why else would these two guys faced each other three times at Wrestlemania?

In fact from all the wrestlers who have come and gone, if you were to hold a vote amongst the loyal wrestling fans as to who they would like to see return for one last match or program, The Rock would be near the top of the list, if not the top. A lot of people were reminded of how much they missed this legend when he gave his lengthy speech that inducted his grandfather into the WWE’s Hall of Fame. I know I did. Man I wish he was still around. I think my favorite memories of The Rock stem from his promos on Stephanie McMahon and HHH, when he was calling her a whore. Those were the days. Just awesome and hilarious promos that made me refuse to miss a single episode of Monday Night Raw.

The fact that The Rock is the only professional wrestler in the history of the WWE to have a show named after him and that says it all. Smackdown. What more could say how much a bigger role he played in the history of professional wrestling than that. In fact I still don’t believe that the company was ever able to recover from losing him. Orton seems to be coming into his own but he still seems unable to make us smile the way The Rock used to. They tried to mold Cena into a Rocky-variation and they might have succeeded if they hadn’t watered down the character for the debut of The Marine and he never recovered. Other than those two guys currently, they have literally no one who can entertain us the way The Rock could back then.

I think later in life The Rock will return to the ring in a manager role but never again in an in ring capacity and that really is a shame. I don’t think there was anyone who literally was quite as electrifying to watch in an in-ring capacity than when The Rock did his hope spots. I still remember being a kid and begging my parents to order the Rock vs. Mankind vs. Ken Shamrock PPV match and them making it clear that it just wasn’t happening. I also remember jumping with excitement the next day when I heard that The Rock had managed to pull out the victory. That was the kind of effect The Rock had on me and millions of other kids. It wasn’t that we loved The Rock. We wanted to be him. Hell I still want to be him…. Don’t you?

An amazing talent…near as I can tell, only two wrestlers of the modern day have managed to truly transcend wrestling: Hulk Hogan and the Rock.

And the Rock has the Hulkster beat in at least one capacity: the movies he’s been in are of slightly higher quality.

I’d have put him higher (I mean…dude got modern day crowds to go ape over an ELBOW DROP!), but it’s good to see well-deserved props going to The Great One.

  • Michael Crow

Just wait Greg, 6 to go and there are at least 4 straight of the top of my head that top the Rock no question. But something tells me Benoit’s debut on this list is going to set off a huge debate. Especially if it’s #1.

  • http://morganwick.blogspot.com Morgan Wick

I’m guessing the four that top the Rock are Hogan, Flair, Austin, and either Hart or Michaels.

I hope to God you aren’t serious about Benoit being the remaining interloper in the top 6. Forget about how his life ended, despite being a god of “workrate” he’s nowhere NEAR as accomplished as anyone else in the top 7. Of course you plopped Kurt Angle at #9 as well, but Benoit isn’t even in the same class as him – to rank him ahead of the Rock is just ridiculous, never mind any of the others. I know you put together this list not long after The Incident, but for Pete’s sake!

  • Steven Gepp

I think the thing about the Rock that made me take notice was that he was willing to put guys over. Would anyone else have made Jericho look a million bucks like Rock did? And losing to Brock Lesnar like he did really made him seem like ‘the next big thing’. That is something other guys – HHH, Austin, Undertaker, Michaels, Hart – did not seem to do as much as the Rock. He did not mind losing; entertaining was more important than a win-loss column. Anyway, that’s the way I saw it…

  • Andy

Literally electrifying? How long were you in the burn ward?

  • http://comicsnexus.com/author/gmguity/ Greg Manuel

I’d put Hart before I would Michaels, but that’s just me.

But yeah, I’d have Hogan, Flair, Austin, Rock & Hart as the Top 5 in that order, myself…but I guess we’ll see. It’ll be interesting to see if Benoit will make this list, but Dynamite Kid made it in, despite being an absolute ass both in his private life and backstage…

  • http://comicsnexus.com/author/gmguity/ Greg Manuel

(Of course, to compare the behavior of the two is like a pebble vs. a landfill, but still…)

  • http://mikeyllorin.tumblr.com Mikey

    Heck I still do. Hahaha.

  • Michael Crow

I was serious about Benoit. The vote on this I believe actually preceeded the Incident, so I wouldn’t doubt in the slightest him being this high up.

And I wasn’t even thinking of Bret…I’ll give you him too. So that’s 5 guys definately ahead of Rocky in my opinion. Awesome worker for all he did, but the limited amount of time he worked kills his ranking. But if we’re talking pure quality, I think Rocky has an argument for #1.

  • K.C.

You know that Benoit will be on there in the top 6, which if you look at his strictly “in-ring” success is probably justified.

But, in terms of entertainment value – which is why most people watch wrestling – there is NO WAY Benoit should be higher than the Rock.

The remaining six should be Flair, Hogan, Austin, HBK, Hart and Benoit in that order. The list’s integrity is put in question if Benoit is higher than any of those others. You could make an argument that all except Hogan were better workers and I don’t care how many five-star matches he’s had, Benoit should not be over Hogan. We’ll see.

  • http://comicsnexus.com/author/gmguity/ Greg Manuel

In probably another two hours or so #6 will be up, so this debate will probably be carried over whoever gets that slot. But in my opinion, there is no way that Flair goes over Hogan or HBK goes over Hart.

Because there’s gotta be more than just being a good worker and entertainment value – there’s also gotta be overall lasting contribution to the business.

Hogan should be #1 because without Hogan’s presence, wrestling doesn’t become mainstream and Vince McMahon doesn’t get to throw around the words “sports entertainment.” Flair totally carried the NWA during the 80s (especially once they lost Magnum TA to that auto accident), and even with the contribution of the Horsemen, Flair wouldn’t have taken wrestling to those other levels that Hogan was able to do for the WWF. And Austin was pretty much the second coming of Hogan (to really over-simplify) that Vince McMahon had been looking for, so that’s what nets him #3.

I don’t know if Bret deserves to be #4, but I do know he deserves ranked ahead of HBK. I’m COMPLETELY erasing Montreal as a factor here. Bret should go over HBK not only because of how well he worked with a variety of opponents, and not only because it fell on him to carry the WWF through the low-points of the post-steroids scandal, but also because of the work he put in towards cultivating Austin for that top spot and the sheer entertainment value of the USA vs. Canada angle.

And then there’s the Ladder Match, which came from Stampede Wrestling and is now a WrestleMania staple. You’re now more likely to see a Ladder Match on that show than you are an Intercontinental Title Match. And if we factor the Stampede record (including his ring wars with Dynamite), we have to admit that he pretty much did everything HBK did…roughly ten to fifteen years prior.

Now all this has me asking…just what were the deciding factors that went into this voting process?

  • Pete James

is this all you’ve wtitten about the ‘most electrifying man in sports entertainment’?????????

    vastly disappointing

oh and ‘the bottom line’ seems to me to have been named after steve austin so the rock aint the only one….

  • http://morganwick.blogspot.com Morgan Wick

“I was serious about Benoit. The vote on this I believe actually preceeded the Incident, so I wouldn’t doubt in the slightest him being this high up.”

Not necessarily. The introductory post was after the Incident. Only by a week or so, but still, I would have expected some sort of disclaimer that early if such extenuating circumstances were in place. (Okay, so this is mostly because I got a little addled and thought the post’s timing was a sure sign of the voting’s timing…)

Still, even without the Incident, if Benoit ranks higher than Flair at least, we riot.

  • Aaron Glazer

The voe was pre-incident. We’ll discuss Benoit if/when we get there.

  • Starr

I rekcon you are quite dead on with that.
