10 Thoughts on Christian’s Return to WWE
by Victor Malar on February 11, 2009

Greetings IP Universe.

Welcome to a special edition of 10 Thoughts–Return of Christian edition.

There has been a lot of talk (both here and elsewhere) about his return, so I thought I’d put in my $0.02 on the topic.

1. First and foremost, it’s just great to see him back in Titanland.

2. He’s on ECW and he’s going to be the top face of the show, and along with Jack Swagger, will be who the brand revolves around.

3. Assuming Swagger beats Finlay at No Way Out, then a Swagger vs. Christian match at Wrestlemania 25 for the ECW Title is a very real possibility.

4. There are some who think this is a bad idea–putting Christian on ECW, and not Raw or Smackdown.

5. They think that being on ECW is beneath him.

6. So here’s where the question comes in:

7. Is it better that he’s got a whole show (ECW) revolving around him, and has a potential World Title match at Wrestlemania 25?

8. Or would it be better if he were on Raw or Smackdown and be lost in the shuffle on either of those two shows, and just being a face in the crowd in Money in the Bank?

9. There’s a lot of disappointment that Christian’s not involved in the Edge/Hardyz stuff on SD, and that there won’t be a TLC dream match at Wrestlemania.

10. It’s something to think about as an old favorite makes his return. Send your feedback.

See ya Friday.

I couldn’t agree more with you, Victor. It’s great to see someone who isn’t completely burying the booking decision. And you’re absolutely right about having Christian on a show where he can be the top star. The same people who hate this idea now would be the first to complain if he had been sent to Smackdown and jobbed out to Triple H. Not that I don’t doubt that won’t happen, eventually. Anyway, you made some great points others haven’t thought about because they were too quick to jump on the “Christian to ECW=EPIC FAIL!” train of thought. Good column.

I am certain the thought process was no more complicated than this…

“Crap, everyone expects Christian to be the guy picking on Jeff. Make it Matt!”

“Crap, Matt has to leave ECW now so he can do the Hardys feud properly.”

“Crap, ECW’s roster looks rubbish now.”

“Crap, Christian needs a spot. Let’s put him where Matt used to be.”

So now we get Edge & Matt Hardy as a tag team on the house show circuit. Weird.

    1. that was more like 6.5 thoughts…
    2. 6 and 10 weren’t even thoughts at all…
    3. 1 was more of an observation…
4.I feel cheated and will no longer read your free column…
    5. so there!

To me, the thought was, “what’s worse, being a top guy in ECW, or being lost in the shuffle in TNA?”

Thank you captaing3000… that was annoying.

“To me, the thought was, “what’s worse, being a top guy in ECW, or being lost in the shuffle in TNA?””

He’s in roughly the same spot he was in TNA when he started there, except ECW is better booked, so I’d say the former.

I’m not so much disappointed with the idea of Christian on ECW as the execution, of his being thrown out with no build and getting a tepid reaction (although he did at least get a chant, so that was nice). His match with Swagger was kind of one sided, too, but I can live with that, especially since they want to keep Swagger strong.

I’d like to see if you could get a “You Screwed Matt! Screw You Matt!” chant going at one of those matches. Also, they could bond over all of the diseases Lita gave them.

I think Christian on ECW is a great idea. Even though most of the IWC has given up on ECW, the WWE hasn’t, and they wanted to add credibility. Christan and Swagger will have good – to – great matches. Christian will be deafted in April to either the red or blue show. Then everyone will bitch about how he is used there.

And finally, putting Christina on ECW isn’t as bad for his name as people may think. He was never the second coming of the Rock or Jericho. A lot of people may ask “Who is this guy?” or “Why did he come back?”

I know that everybody felt that Christian reuniting with Edge would be the best thing, especially if it programmed him with Hardy. And a return at the Rumble would have gotten monster reaction. What we don’t know is how long that angle would go before Christian was just “Edge’s lesser lackey brother.”

The ECW debut was fun, if not as OMG HOLY as a more high-profile debut would have been. It does give him an opportunity to re-establish himself in WWE on his own merits, and does not cast him in Edge’s shadow immediately. I do not think WWE will ever view Christian as more than an upper mid-card guy, and I’m happy if he’s given the chance to work and be entertaining and in good feuds in that position. If he’s always going to be 2nd to Edge, perhaps better to be separated from him.

I don’t see the face run going that long though. Good face, great heel. =D
