So Ring of Honor returns once again with an offering on HDNet and the show is headlined by “The American Dragon” Bryan Danielson against Tyler Black. That is enough to make me tune in. Is it enough to make you read on?
The Dark City Fight Club vs. Grizzly Redwood and Andy “Right Leg” Ridge
This one is squash city. There really isn’t much more to say.
Winner: The Dark City Fight Club via pinfall
We go to the back and Danielson says he does not care about who the fans cheer for. He will see how good Black is.
Nigel McGuinness is in the ring and runs down the fans and his opponent Alex “Sugarfoot” Payne.
Alex “Sugarfoot” Payne vs. Nigel McGuinness
This one is another squash but with a few more hope spots. The hope turns to dismay as a Tower of freaking London wins the match. That move never wins matches. Nigel killed it a good long while ago against TJ Perkins. This was fun and Nigel had the crowd absolutely hating him.
Winner: Nigel McGuinness via pinfall
We get an interview with Tyler Black and he talks about watching Danielson while he was growing up. Wait….what? I mean I guess Tyler is young, but Danielson isn’t even 30 yet. Whatever.
Chris Hero and Eddie Edwards vs. RoH Tag Team Champ Kevin Steen and Jay Briscoe
Briscoe and Steen are teaming because Sweet and Sour Inc. and the American Wolves took out their respective partners. This match is surprisingly short for what it could have been. Hero has been on RoH on HDNet a bunch, but hasn’t really gotten to show of his stuff. This match is no different. Steen ends up scoring the win on Eddie Edwards after the Package Piledriver.
Winners: Kevin Steen and Jay Briscoe via pinfall
Main Event: Tyler Black vs. “American Dragon” Bryan Danielson
Not surprisingly these guys put on a heck of a show. Still, it does not have the sence of urgency that some of their earlier encounters have. The match does pick up, though. In a great spot Dragon does the Tiger Mask flip as a dodge and then reverses an enziguri from Tyler into an ankle lock. Dragon really runs a clinic in this match. Tyler struggles to keep up, but in a good way to fit into the story. Black hits paroxysm which is so not a fitting name for the move, but it only gets a two count. Black tries the Phoenix Splash, misses, Dragon locks in the choke, but it gets countered into the Turnbuckle Powerbomb (Bucklebomb is the stupidest move name ever). That puts both men down and time expires. This was pretty much the best match RoH has put on HDNet so far.
Result: Time Limit Draw
Next week we get Ric Flair and a main event of Austin Aries vs. Roderick Strong
Big Andy Mac’s Big Andy Final Thoughts: This show was the exact same format as every show before it, and the show is still directionless. They don’t give new fans a reason to care about any of the characters week to week. Granted, the tape delay makes storylines hard, but the TV show could very well have its own continuity or at least storylines. You’ll notice I did not speak ill of Mike Hogewood this time around. The dude is getting better. He is now ignorable. In a show or two he may be downright enjoyable, but I may be getting ahead of myself.
I’ll see you next time…
