A Modest Blog on Jericho’s place in history
by Aaron Glazer on June 8, 2009

Welcome back to me. As we all know, you missed me terribly. Admit it to yourself. Better now? Well it should be, because I’m back with a new column, a new format, and a new contest. Read on for a chance to win a copy of Chris Jericho’s book.

So, from here on out you’ll be getting several doses of this column a week as any time my girlfriend and I are watching a show or I read any interesting news, I’ll be hopping on for a quick column about it. Ideally this gets you guys a lot more content on a lot more subjects in much easier to digest subjects… now on to the meat of this column.

The WWE had their big Extreme Rules Pay Per View, which set up a number of new programs for the company, but none of those new programs were what struck me most about the show. What really stayed with me as the show ended was, in fact, something the WWE had just done a few months prior. Rey Misterio was in yet another feud over his mask and what he was hiding, essentially the same feud he had with Kane upon his return to Raw. This time, however, instead of lackluster responses of that storyline, the crowd was fully into it this time, even though the focus of the battles were exactly the same. The difference? Chris Jericho is now the one carrying the heel side of things. It’s no secret Jericho has been amazing in his new role- he was, after all, Superstar of the Year in 2008, but few have thus far realized just how historically important this career renaissance has been.

Chris Jericho, with his amazing return, is putting among the top five wrestlers of the modern era. As we all know, among the IWC most consider the elite of the modern era to be Hogan for his drawing power and crossover appeal, Flair for his amazing abilities and longevity, and Steve Austin for his ability to combine the two, albeit for a short time. After that, there is great disagreement in rounding out the top five, although Shawn Michaels is a front runner for at least one spot. Chris Jericho, has now, however, had a career that’s every bit as accomplished of that as the far more heralded HBK. Jericho has and can do it all.

From success as a junior in Japan, to hardcore acceptance in ECW, he traveled the backroads and earned his way. Once in WCW, he became the most over cruiserweight, injecting much needed personality into the division while having perhaps its most memorable feud with Dean Malenko, along with great matches and wars with wrestlers like Rey Misterio and Chris Benoit. He managed to get so over, he almost destroyed the glass ceiling by accident with his never meant to be, fake feud with Goldberg that The Miz is currently reliving the template of with John Cena. Finally, reaching the WWE, he instantly became one of the top promo men in the biggest company in the world, having memorable verbal battles with the likes of the Rock and Steve Austin, before going on to classic feuds, in and out of the ring, with Chris Benoit and Triple H, along with more battles with Austin and the Rock. He was a stalwart of the Smackdown Six, maybe the best consistent in ring quality in the history of the USA, then going on to be extremely entertaining as a partner and then foil for Christian, before putting Cena over and making him a star. When he returned he immediately added new gravitas to his case, putting on the all time classic HBK feud and pulling Rey to his best performance in years currently. With all these top feuds and matches, elite promos, second-to-none in ring skill, and even longevity, Jericho has earned his place in the top five of this era.

Want to win a copy of Jericho’s book? Write in the comments below (you don’t even need to register) whether it’s better that CM Punk remain face or heel as Smackdown Champion. I’ll contact the winner via e-mail and be back tomorrow with my thoughts on the matter.

Jericho and Rey have been tearing it up. I’ll pay just to watch those two.

Punk should turn heel. Sneak attacking Hardy was a cowardly move but could be explained away by his straight-edge (read “I’m better than you”) attitude toward Hardy. This leaves him potentially Hardy, Undertaker, John Morrison, Rey Mysterio and (a long shot) the Great Khali to work with as faces.
His possible heel challengers are Edge, Chris Jericho and (another long shot) Shelton Benjamin. Heel Punk just makes more sense today.

I think they should leave him face, if only because the aforementioned Jericho has the “better than you hypocrites” heel role down pretty well.

Plus, I can’t think of any hateable thing about the straight edge lifestyle, being of the belief myself.

Punk should stay face for the time being. We have enough heels right now.

  • Rob

    Punk should be heel.

Turning Punk heel is definitely a good move. I thing Punk is great, but he had grown a little stale. And judging from his ROH heel work, i look forward to see what kind of heat he can draw, and using Hardy to begin his heel turn was a good idea. I also like the possible feuds it could open up for him.

  • LC

    wait.
    I thought the Smackdown Six was Angle/Benoit – The Guerreros – Rey/Edge.

Not that Jericho isn’t great, but I didn’t think he was part of the Six.

As for heel straight edge, its easy to do. Just be a sanctimonious prick about it. I’m torn as to whether or not he turns, personally.

You’re totally right about the SD Six. I was getting it confused with when he teamed with Benoit TLC era facing the Hardyz, E and C, and the Dudleyz.

Well, well, well. Look what the cat dragged in!

It’s good to see you back in the trenches, Mr. Glazer.

I already have the Jericho book (signed by Y2J himself, even) but I’ll share my thoughts anyway. Punk is an incredible heel and WWE has yet to experience that side of Brooks’ performance spectrum – it’s time.

Regarding the SmackDown! Six, no it didn’t include Jericho. “LC” above has it right. But Jericho is incredible, and has carved a deep niche all his own in the biz…

    Welcome back, Ace!

Jericho has been one of the best for a long time. For me he truly broke out in WCW’s Cruiserweight Division, injecting it with more charisma than anyone had shown up to that point (Eddie Guerrero would go on to break out) while maintaining fantastic matches. He could do undercard heel humor like the Goldberg “feud,” or main event face humor when he was giving the Rock a run for his money. Since last year he’s shown an astounding capacity for the monotone heel character, putting together two of the most interesting feuds WWE has in those two years – last year Vs. Michaels, and now Vs. Mysterio.

As far as Punk – Smackdown doesn’t have many faces for him to defend against. Their top guys are heels in Jericho and Edge. So while I’d rather watch a heel “snake” Punk, they’d have to push new stars quickly to rival him. Mysterio would be a great challenger except he’s tied up with Jericho. If you give me good opponents, I’m game. Morrison Vs. Punk, anyone?

  • Awesome

Punk could go either way, because there’s likely to be a triple threat coming up with both Edge and Jeff wanting rematches. He could have good matches as a face against Edge or as a heel against Jeff, or even a face against Jeff. Personally, a slow heel turn in a Punk Jeff feud would be pretty damn sweet.

  • nbiz

CM Punk is set up for a perfect heel situation on Smackdown.

With him as a heel feuding with a face Jeff Hardy, CM Punk can play off his straight edge lifestyle and use the gimmick to perfection over an opponent who is just as well-known for his partying ways. CM Punk flat-out saying “I am better than you” to Hardy because of his choice of lifestyle is going to add some fuel to the fire.

    It almost writes itself.

  • Benny

I’m thinking it’s been setup to go for a Triple Threat match at the Bash between Hardy, Edge, & Punk. That said, I’m not sure about a Punk heel turn right now since he does sell merchandise. For now, I’d keep him as a face. If the fans don’t respond to him as champ, take the title off of him and have him gradually turn heel.

  • Walter Kovacs

Punk heel would be cool, BUT, right now he’s the top face on Smackdown. Hardy can’t be relied upon until he’s both healthy and signed full time. While Taker is away, Punk’s “the man”. As a heel, he has both Edge and Jericho as ‘bigger’ heels than him. If the goal is to get Punk over legit … having him be the top face on Smackdown is the better choice. It’s always possible to turn him heel later, but for the moment, letting him get actual title feuds out of Edge and Jericho (so far he’s only really had free TV matches with them, teasing what a PPV program with them would be like) would be best.

  • Andrew Wheeler

Welcome back, sir. Your return was long overdue, so it’s nice to see your triumphant return (and writing about the WWE no less!). As for Punk being a heel, it was the topic of my first column at Pulse like 2 years ago, were I begged the writers to turn the guy. Ah well, I’ll probably do a follow-up column on it this week if I get a free moment. If not, I’ll probably blame you somehow.

  • Danny D

Since you brought up the top 5 wrestlers question, is anyone going to post the final article for your top 100?

  • Danny D

Punk should be used as a heel. He’s been midcard for a long time now, so having him as a dominant face would be inconsistent, and we already saw the underdog face thing a year ago. Hardy deserves a rematch, face GM Teddy Long will probably give him one, and Punk won’t get cheered over Hardy, as we saw Sunday. The straightedge angle can get him over even more, and he can incorporate real life aspects in the storyline like with Raven in ROH. We know they’re willing to address Jeff’s personal issues, as we saw in the Matt fued. They have to turn Punk at some point to avoid him becoming too stale, and there won’t be any better time to do it, with Hardy as the top face, Jericho as #2 heel tied up with Mysterio, and Edge possibly becoming a tweener based on last night.

  • Some Dude

I don’t know if the contest is still on, but I’ll throw my two cents in, anyway.

I think Punk should go heel, but he may have to stay a face out of necessity. Rey’s busy with Jericho and Jeff may be on his way out, so Punk’s the only credible top face they have. I’d prefer to see heel Punk at this point. I feel like it could be his ticket straight to the top. His ROH stuff proves that. But unless they decide to turn Edge face, I don’t know if I see heel Punk happening any time soon.

  • Kim

He should become a heel. Heels are always more entertaining.
