One of the greatest wrestlers of the modern era and a true legend of Japanese wrestling passed away last night after what preliminary reports say was a heart attack in the ring. You can read more about the story here. You can leave your thoughts below.
Our condolences go out to Misawa’s friends and family.
This is truly horrible.
This is very saddening and shocking news. Misawa will never be forgotten!
RIP champ. Thanks for all the great memories you left us.
Chris Hero was at ringside: http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=6902064&blogId=494598215
“Words cannot express how deeply shocked I am. We’re all just in utter disbelief. Stunned sadness.
The moments at ringside felt an eternity. Never, in my life, have I wanted the fighting spirit to jump into someone’s being more than I wanted tonight. The fans chanted Misawa, Misawa, Misawa. They wanted their Hero to get up so fucking bad. Just get up. Come on! You’re too tough for this. Too strong. I grabbed his boots and held onto them til they took him away.
My heart goes out to his family. His students. His peers. His friends. His fans. His opponents tonight and his partner. It was a freak accident. No one is at fault.
Rest in Peace Shacho.”
Oh my God! :( RIP Misawa.
He left us a legacy of cringe-inducing bumps and “holy shit, did you see that?” moments.
I must, if I had to pick one wrestler that would die from something that happened in the ring, it would have been him.
I’m not the biggest follower of Japanese pro wrestling around, but I know who Misawa was, and it is so sad to see that he is dead — and that it happened in the ring.
But my hope is that something else didn’t contribute to it, and that people don’t condemn pro wrestling as a result. There are times (Voldemort) when that is warranted.
This, hopefully, is not one of them. Sayanora, Misawa-san.
