A Modest Blog on the Birthplace of New Stars

I’m beginning to think that those hoping for a main event push for guys like MVP and Dolph Ziggler are barking up the wrong tree. It isn’t because of the glass ceiling, or anything else that means the WWE aren’t willing to promote younger guys; they clearly are. It’s just that pretty much everyone the WWE seems to have serious plans for is coming from ECW. Don’t believe me? Let’s take a look.

CM Punk is obviously the most successful wrestler to come out of the ECW camp thus far, as a two time champion, he’s already risen to the top. The man he faced most often in ECW is John Morrison, currently in the midst of a huge push on Smackdown, he’s beaten Punk clean and getting a huge push. In the undercard while these two were tearing up ECW, was Kofi Kingston. Kofi has been steadily pushed up the Raw card and given the U.S.Title, allowed to steal a few shows with extremely flashy moves, and has apparently been put into the RVD spot of flashy-uppercarder who can main event in-case of emergency. To set that up, they have him feuding with one of Raw’s few viable main eventers, the Big Show. Let’s not forget Morrison’s former partner, the Miz, who’s feuding with John Cena and seems to be getting a push mimicking that of Cena’s early career.

The current crop of ECW graduates are already receiving mega-pushes as well. Jack Swagger was brought to Raw, mixed in with Randy Orton, and now gets to work a program with MVP. While its certainly feasible that this program elevates both Swagger and MVP, Swagger is still likely the one to ultimately win and ascent first, since he’s now in front of a new audience and probably won’t job in his first big feud. Beyond Swagger, we have Evan Bourne, who was being pushed as the new Rey Misterio before injury and, now, has been brought to Raw where he immediately got a ton of offense in on the World Champion, then beat the U.S. Champ. Of course, the Hart Dynasty, with the least T.V. time of everyone were brought to their new show with less fanfare, even if the Unified Tag Titles suddenly found their way to the same show they were drafted to.

So while a push for MVP, Ziggler and the others would be nice, we’re also constantly left wondering why these guys are jobbed out so often. The answer that has to be looked at is that the WWE sees them as enhancement upper-midcarders, not trained and over in exactly the manner WWE wants like those the company chose to send to ECW, then brought to Raw and Smackdown to push to the moon.

  1. The reason the WWE is pushing all these “main eventers” is because they have nobody else to push.
In all due respect who are these guys? I can only say that I have only watched a few shows in recent times because flat out “THERE’S NO REAL SEASONED TALENT OUT THERE”.What I see doesn’t even interest a seasoned wrestling fan.I’m not even watching it for free at home much anymore let alone would I pay the high ticket prices for what the WWE is now calling a show.
Where did these guys come from .
Ten to twenty years ago if you mentioned a main eventer’s name to some one in the general public they generaly knew who you were talking about (Oh yeah, the big blond headed guy refering to Hogan,or the giant Andre, or Dusty , or Flair or the bald headed guy refering to Steve Austin)
It seems to me in my sporadic watching of the shows recently that every time I watched there seemed to be some new dude they were pushing that came out of no where.Who wants to watch some dude in dreadlocks coming out and singing “What’s Up, WHAT’S Up” or some dudes called “KRYME TYME” . I can go down the street and see and hear that kind of junk.Just flat out face it , the day of the real wrestlers are gone for good and the old timers that are still around are just trying to get some money out of the business before it finally collapses for good.
Now I know old JR sells you wrestling buffs a lie “that all is well in the business and the WWE’S future look bright” to keep you interested BUT MAN SEE THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER , WRESTLING IS DONE AND OVER AND YOU WILL SEE WHY ALL THESE GUYS ARE GETTING THE SO CALLED PUSH AS YOU CALL IT.WRESTLING HAS LOST ITS LUSTER FOR GOOD. The WWE either held back its excellent talent and they went elswhere or retired or through its political system pushed all its excellent talent out the door is one of the main reasons the business is where it is today and all these “where did they come from guys ” are getting the push and as a result wrestling no longer has its draw anymore as it once did.

  2. Or the business is in the same position its been in for years, not as great as the boom periods of the 80’s and late 90’s but not as low as the mid 90’s.
Of the so called new guys who came out of nowhere, Ron Killings is a 2 time NWA champion, multiple time NWA tag champion, and formerly in the WWE when he first debuted about 9 years ago. Kofi Kingston came through the WWE developmental program after being a standout high school and collegiate wrestler. Jack Swagger is a 2 time all american wrestler. CM Punk was one of the biggest stars on the indies and is now a 2 time WWE Champion. Ted Dibiase Jr and the Hart Dynasty have years of experience wrestling all over the world. Evan Bourne might not be the most technically sound but is definitely the heir apparent to rey mysterio.
My point here is that this isn’t the days of the WCW power plant where any guy off the street is getting a try out and a contract if he has the body and sticks out the training. Don’t confuse a lack of mainstream celebrity with a failing business. The business may not be what a lot of people in the IWC want it to be, but its certainly not the doom and gloom scenario you’re proposing.

  4. Good point brad, and I would respond in kind, but the last thing the world (or atleast the pulse) needs is someone cutting a promo about the state of the WWE on a message board. If ya smell…..jk
