A Modest Blog on FCW
by Aaron Glazer on July 10, 2009

WWE has taken a lot of heat for Florida Championship Wrestling. First, it was that they really shouldn’t do their development in house, since it limits style and self-expression of talent, and later it became a “how dare they close OVW” issue, as FCW seemed unprepared to be the main developmental spot. Both fears have seemingly proved unfounded, happily, and FCW is rolling along.

First, the wrestlers in FCW have come from a variety of different backgrounds, so the homogenization of styles hasn’t bee severe at all. Wrestlers like The Hart Dynasty, Evan Bourne, and Kaval (Low Ki) have risen or are rising at an extraordinary pace, despite receiving initial training outside of the WWE’s watchful gaze, while those trained mostly in FCW like Jack Swagger and Kofi Kingston have been some of the WWE’s more interesting recent wrestlers, utilizing something outside of the house style.

While this was going on, FCW became a really good promotion, with top notch television and good up and comers. They’ve been hurt by so many recent graduates to ECW, but to see some really good wrestling and wrestlers rise up the card, fans should really check youtube, daily motion, or other video sites to see just how good some of these new guys are, or check out how their favorites on WWE television began.

FCW is getting a better rap, but if you go to their website, a lot of their guys look very cookie cutter or are kids of wrestlers. I think with the exception of Low Ki the cream has already risen, but maybe Sheamus can turn out to be awesome.

I agree with Big Andy Mike.FCW is being pushed to be made out more than what it realy is.Being from the Philadelphia – New York corridor I’m biased to the old school indy promotions like Afa Sr’s WXW , Larry Sharpe’s Monster Factory and the OVW which have turned out some tremendous talent for the WWE over the years (both past & recent years)
I was on a work assignment in Florida back in October and got to see FCW action on TV there and I have to say I was not impressed at all.I thought about attending their Sunday afternoon show/taping but doing power plant outage work is hard work and after what I saw on TV it was easy to make the decision to stay at the motel and catch up on rest.Having the privelage to have been around Afa Sr’s WXW promotion and talent I basically did not see the talent, the zeal for the business or even the quality of a show in the FCW as one would see at one Afa’s WXW live or taped televised shows.
I believe the WWE made a big mistake in breaking its ties with the OVW and I suspect relations between them and Afa’s WXW aren’t as good as they used to be either.
Let’s remember guys like Batista, John Cena , Brock Lesner, Sniski, Rikishi, Rock, Umanga. Big Show,Kane,Bam Bam Bigelo, Bundy, etc. and other big names spent time in these promotions(some even worked for both of them) to get them ready for the WWE or get them back in shape for the WWE.The WWE is shooting itself in the foot by looking just to the FCW for its talent.Like Big Andy stated they are all cookie cutter and that’s the talent your going to have in the WWE soon “They’ll all be cookie cutter look alikes from the same school with the same moves with no variety in style “. It will be like most of those who came out of the WCW’S Power Plant. They all had similiar gimmicks and similiar styles and that played a part in the WCW’S demise.
Now the father son thing in the WWE/FCW is another hot item.I’m a old school type of guy but I have to say one thing that I don’t like about the old school days (particularly in the old south and Texas promotions) that if you weren’t some big talent’s son you weren’t going to get the push as soon as they did because of who their dad was.I think we are seeing history repeat iteself in the current WWE/FCW .I’m amazed at the fact that the Cody Rhoades/Ted Dibease Jr thing has lasted as long as it has based on the fact that one has to hard and long at it to see WHAT’S THE ATTRACTION.I’m not saying they don’t come from a good wrestling heritage but they have not been in the business long enough nor do they have the in ring ability to pull that kind of standing in the business this early in their careers. The real wrestling talent in the Rhoades family is covered up behind all that gold paint and it’s a shame that the WWE long ago killed his wrestling career that a Dusty – Dustin heated angle can’t be made.At the same time the WWE released some excellent in ring talent in the form of Manu earlier this year. This dude can out wrestle/outfight both Cody and Ted Jr any day of the week and I’m talking both in script and in actuality. The guys been wrestling since he was 13 and it shows. It’s a shame the WWE politics and creative couldn’t see what they could have done with him if they wanted to.
With all that said this WWE/FCW thing is going to backfire very soon. I don’t think this Cody/Ted Jr thing is going to last much longer and don’t be suprised if you see them on a different WWE brand or in another circuit .

Well that is for sure they released excellent talent, like Kafu, Manu and so many more, but they keep all those cookie cutters, and of course the second generation wrestlers. Kafu and Manu could be a really good great tag team in raw or Smackdown, but they dont see that. Who knows what goes in the minds of the creative team.
