CBS 3 in Philadelphia reports that indie wrestler Matt “Riot” Lowry died Tuesday night following an incident during training at the ECW Arena on Monday night.
According to the article, there are conflicting reports about the cause of Lawry’s death; police say he died of severe head injuries, while an anonymous trainer claims that Lowry suffered an aneurysm while warming up for his training session. An autopsy to determine the cause of death is scheduled for Wednesday.
PWI’s Mike Johnson points out that the Arena’s website lists CZW as the company holding training sessions on Mondays.
Pulse Wrestling offers its condolences to Lowry’s friends and family.
UPDATE: CZW has issued the following statement on its site…
Combat Zone Wrestling has received many inquires about the death of independent wrestler Matt “Riot” Lowry. We would like to clarify:
Matt Lowry had no position with Combat Zone Wrestling LLC, nor was he a student. He was in town to work for another promotion and came to the Arena in South Philadelphia where our performers gather to work out. He joined in some warm up activities, including running, squats and push-ups. After which, he sat in a chair and said something like “I feel dizzy”. He fell over and 911 was called immediately. A local fire company responded and they called for an ambulance. CZW Owner David “DJ Hyde” Markland and other wrestlers followed the ambulance to the hospital. CZW contacted Lowry’s father and had wrestlers stay at the hospital until he arrived from Ohio. We were told Lowry died of a brain hemorrhage and that there was no evidence of acute head trauma or that his work out caused his death. CZW wishes to extend its condolences to Matt’s family and hopes that our fans will keep them in their thoughts and prayers.
We at Combat Zone Wrestling LLC, remind fans that pro wrestling is a dangerous activity; however we strive to protect the safety of our students and performers through proper training and discourage anyone from attempting to imitate our performers.

A good friend of mine passed away today, nothing like this has ever really happened so I don’t even know how to process it or what to say. Matt was a great dude he was far from perfect but the dude had a heart of gold and was always there when you needed him. Its a shame I didnt have a chance to say good bye, Matt had gone through some personal problems earlier in the year but finally seemed to be getting his life back on track and its horrible it had to end like this. The dude was only 21 fucking years old!
I first met Matt around 2006 he use to drive all the way from Columbus just to help set up AIW shows he worked so hard for us and he didnt even wrestle on the shows at that time. Eventually MAtt earned a spot on the roster and became AIW tag champion, he worked so hard from being a ring crew guy to a champion.
MY favorite memory with Matt was in 2007 at the AIW show in Athens we had the best time and that is where we really became friends, for those who were there just think about Matt and the girl with the broken foot in the cast. I had alot of great times with the dude he was such a genuine person in a business full of liars. Matt could always make you laugh and was always just happy to be a part of the locker room. He was constantly part of horrible hazing amongst the boys but he would take it in stride and always have a smile on his face and he always found away to joke about it.
I really wanted Matt to get his life together and told him not to worry about AIW for a while we just recently contacted him to do our December 20th show as everything seemed to be turning around for him. It is the hardest news I think I have ever received when I got that text message today I have never had a friend die.
Matt I will miss you and you will forever be in my thoughts Im glad I had the chance to become your friend
