More WWE PPV Changes
By Matthew Michaels - October 26, 2009 | Email the author

F4Wonline.com is reporting that Backlash and Judgment Day are no longer WWE pay-per-view names. Extreme Rules is moving from June to May 23, and it looks like Backlash’s name will be changed (although that name is still listed on WWE.com).

Will we be seeing the return of King of the Ring? Or perhaps a War Games-like event? Based on an earlier poll on our site, those are two gimmicks our readers would like to see used at the center of WWE PPVs.

Here is the most up-to-date WWE PPV schedule:

11/22/09 – Survivor Series
12/13/09 – TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs
1/31/10 – Royal Rumble
2/21/10 – Elimination Chamber
3/28/10 – WrestleMania XXVI
4/25/10 – Backlash
5/23/10 – Extreme Rules
6/10 TBD – The Bash
7/10 TBD – Night of Champions
8/10 TBD – SummerSlam
9/10 TBD – Breaking Point
10/10 TBD – Hell in a Cell/Bragging Rights

I’d personally like to see WWE trim down to a 12 PPV per year schedule, getting rid of Judgment Day, Backlash and The Bash, moving the Hell in a Cell PPV to the summer and doing a King of the Ring-like tournament right after Mania (in order to kick-start the push of a new star for the year). Post your thoughts in the comments.

  1. Eh, I like Hell in a Cell being in October. Seems like it fits pretty well. I do admit that there are a ridiculous amount of ppvs right now though. Still not sure how I feel about the themed ppvs. At least as often as they’re done.

  2. I hate King of Ring. In the ten years or whatever they did it, it produced exactly ONE good match (Bret/Perfect).

One night tournaments suck. Period. End of story.

  3. Tournaments RULE!

    Signed, the TOURNEY-MARK!

  4. Yeah I agree with Vinny. If they are going with themed ppvs they’ve got King of the Ring SITTING RIGHT THERE…

    Signed, a fellow tourney mark

  5. Thanks Mark! KoTR was always fun. All they’d have to do to make it worthwhile again is market it as the “other Royal Rumble”, in that the winner gets a guaranted title shot at SummerSlam. It ain’t rocket science, folks.

  6. KOTR is a great angle producer if booked correctly. It worked for Kurt in 2000 and Brock in 2002. The Summerslam title shot was $$$ because it shoehorned in guys that weren’t previously in the main event – even for just one match. I remember marking out when Kurt won and inserted himself right into the Rock/HHH feud.

  7. Looks like the WWE has finally wised up and is going to one PPV a month instead of what appeared to be a PPV every three weeks (except for around WM), which makes it pretty close to impossible to get any decent booking. This just about makes up for the lame name replacements (e.g. Elimination chamber).

  8. King of the Ring is awesome and should be brought back, especially if, like Vin said, they attach a title shot at Summerslam to it (a la Brock in 2002).

Don’t forget to add Edge in 2001 to the list of guys whose win was a “great angle producer.” Not only did it set the stage for Edge’s move up the card, but it played a role in his and Christian’s break-up.

  9. Well, since no one else said it “The King of Harts” was awesome.

  10. Bragging Rights should probably be the December PPV…you could even combine that with the Slammys as a good end of year wrap up.

  11. Actually War Games would be better in December. But only if they went back to traditional eliminaion matches for Survivor Series. That way the best recieved Survivor Series match could go onto WarGames. You could even have the Smackdown vs Raw theme going all the way from Bragging Rights into the Survivor Series and ending at WarGames.

I do like the idea ofthe KOR tournament being right after Wrestlemania to start a new set of feuds. It would also be the best type of PPV to have the draft around because brand would not matter in the tournament.
