To Be Determined – Wrestlemania 26 Main Event
by Raffi Shamir on March 4, 2010

After doing a crappy job with the buildup to Wrestlemania 25 (Something I still haven’t forgiven WWE for), this year’s offering seems to be headed on the right track. In fact, I might be bold, but I’d say that with the current Wrestlemania 26 card, this could either be best Wrestlemania ever (or at least since X-Seven), or the most disappointing ever.

Just one day after Elimination Chamber, WWE announced three main event caliber matches for this year’s biggest event – The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels, Edge vs. Chris Jericho and John Cena vs. Batista. Add to that Bret Hart vs. Vince McMahon and you have four matches that each of them could headline any Wrestlemania on its own and make it a success. Putting all four together and WWE is faced with a real problem – what will be the main event of Wrestlemania 26?

I think it’s safe to bet that while Bret Hart vs. Vince McMahon is the definition of a “Wrestlemania Moment”, it will not be the main event. But the race between the three other matches is tight. I believe that it’s a rare case where whichever match they choose will be the right choice and not one match is more deserving than the other. Let’s break it down.

Edge vs. Chris Jericho:
The first thing going for this match is that fact that Edge won the Royal Rumble in his comeback from injury. Sadly WWE hasn’t made this a habit, but I think that since there are two championship matches on Wrestlemania every year, the top billing should go to the match featuring the Royal Rumble winner. But this is not the only reason. Of the two championship matches, this one is guaranteed to be excellent and please the fans and the IWC. We have two of WWE’s best all-around performers getting the opportunity to put on a show at the main event of Wrestlemania. Everyone expected this match to take place since these two won the tag-team belts last year and Edge’s injury and return only made the anticipation better. Both Edge and Jericho deserve to be recognized and rewarded for their hard work and constant excellent performances. How can this not be the main event?

John Cena vs. Batista:
Their promo on Raw wasn’t just a script. These two wrestlers are really the faces of WWE in the last decade. Two years ago WWE squandered their first ever match at Summerslam, but this year they’re doing everything right – the initial tease several weeks ago with Bret Hart, the screwjob at Elimination Chamber and this week’s confrontation. This is one of the few main event feuds for either Cena or Batista that hasn’t been done to death and feels fresh and exciting. Their Summerslam match showed that these two work extremely well together so the match will almost certainly live up (or in the IWC eyes surpass) expectations. This year’s with Batista as the killer heel, it could be even better. Sure, everyone knows that Cena is going to win back “his” championship, but the outcome of the other championship match is also predictable. For years Cena vs. Batista had “Wrestlemania Main Event” written all over it. How can this not be the main event?

Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker
(Before moving on I advise everyone to read Will Pruett’s excellent piece on this match. I also feel like I have to mention that I started writing this article before his was published)
Last year I was sitting at the edge of my seat (Or standing because I was too excited to sit) as I witnessed this match live in Houston. There aren’t enough superlatives in the English language to describe it. Triple H was absolutely right when he said no match could follow and if this year’s showdown is even half as good as last year’s, it will still be a classic. But this year has two extra factors that were not present last year – unpredictability and the sense that it’s the end of the road, one way or another. Last year it was obvious that HBK will not break the streak. He was terrific in building this match up and telling the story in the ring, but everyone knew he’s jobbing. This year, though, is the first one since WWE started building up the streak where it’s not clear who would win. In 2008 it was obvious that Michaels would end Ric Flair’s career but no-one knows if HBK is really going to retire. Sure, Guys like Mick Foley and sadly Flair himself are making a mockery of retirement matches, but the retirement stipulation is adding a lot of intrigue. On the other hand, what will be the point of giving us the exact same match-up with the exact same result two years in a row? What good would it make to have HBK lose to The Undertaker in back-to-back Wrestlemanias? Is it possible that HBK will actually win and end the streak? And if he does, what the odds that it would actually lead to Undertaker’s retirement? Something historic is about to end here, Shawn Michaels’ career, The Undertaker’s career or the streak. No matter which one it is, how can this not be the main event?

WWE is in the perfect position for this year’s Wrestlemania. It’s obvious that unlike previous years, it’s not a “one match show” and they seem more focused than ever. It’s quite possible that not even Vince McMahon knows today which match will go last and it may come down to “eeni meeni miney moe” because there is no way to make a rational decision. If it were up to you, what would be your Wrestlemania 26 main event? Answer in the comments below.

I’d put the Jericho/Edge match last as I believe Jericho (My all-time fav) deserves to main event a Wrestlemania and this is his best shot at it thus far, however what I think is the most realistic and correct match order is different. The best possible match order is Jericho/Edge first because it’s going to be very good but might not have the drama of Shawn/Taker or the “Star power” of Batista/Cena,.. Jericho should retain so the fan’s are denied the face win and the fued can continue. The next match should be Cena/Batista as it’s the WWE title match and it’s the two biggest “younger/prime” stars of the WWE,…Cena should win because it’ll please the fans have them feeling great after what may be a let down of a match (Standard Cena superman match) shouldn’t be a clean win though. If any two men ever were above the WWE Title it’d be Shawn/Taker and it’s winner is wide open. Either guy could win and fans will leaves unhappy thus it’s going to be crazy hot. This match is the very definition of BIG TIME,…I don’t even know who SHOULD win. lol

Jericho did main event a Wrestlemania – X8, against Triple H, for the Undisputed Title. The reason you may not remember it is because it was completely overshadowed by Rock-Hogan. Which would in all likelihood happen again, much as I hate to admit it, given that I’m a mark for Edge and Jericho.

I never speak nor think of that match. I have it on the Legends of Wrestlemania DVD and I just can’t watch it. I liked the Hell in the cell match better but not much. That whole undisputed run was a cold deep grave for Jericho as he was booked so weakly. They had him struggling with Cena, looking weak in every victory and being buried in commentary. OH HOW I HATED WWE THEN.

  • ReyTheHussein

I liked the build to last year’s ‘Mania, with the exception of the home invasion thing. That really, really bothered me because, if wrestlers can just show up and fight at e/o’s house (or a supermarket, booker and austin), why have a match in the ring? Other than that I thought it was fine.

I was more disappointed with the aftermath, with them thinking that HHH was a bigger star/face than RKO was. People were going crazy waiting for RKO to make The Leap to SCSA territory, and they screwed it up, bah.

  • Ricardo Rochetti

I was looking forward to that match more than anything in the card (even Rock-Hogan, because I don’t care for Hogan at all and because the “I’m gonna run his ambulance over with a semi” build-up was stupid). In a way, I was surprised with how disappointing the match was, but in retrospect, I shouldn’t have been. HHH and Jericho had always had good matches prior to that (particularly the Fully Loaded 2000 Last Man Standing match, which was my first WWE live event), so I expected their chemistry to carry the day. However, HHH was in what turned out to be a LONG run of bad matches since coming back from the quad injury, and the crowd was obviously exhausted from Rock-Hogan, thus ensuring a heatless main event . . . so it’s not shocking that the match fell flat on its face.

Okay, good article/post/column. Here’s my thinking: Undertaker-HBK is gonna be hated on because it can’t top last year’s match at all. I’d love it if it did, but it probably won’t.

Edge-Y2J is gonna have the internet folks going nuts, and the crowd’ll dig it, but neither of those folks are who the WWE Machine really push on the younger fans that will grow up to be older fans, as the hulkamaniacs and little warriors grew to be Attitude Era fans, which is why the hating on Cena baffles me–it reeks of “I liked this band before anyone else did! Now I hate them!” SMH.

So, the answer is, going last, should be Cena-Batista. The little ones who stay up late enough to see the end should see their hero emerge victorious.

Actually, here’s what you do–Cena vs Batista first, so the little ones don’t have to be up late. Then Taker-HBK, time for the long goodbye the loser would need. You end with Edge going over on Jericho, ending the show with Edge posing on all four turnbuckles. ~fin~

  • Chris

It could go to either Taker-HBK or Jericho-Edge. I don’t see Cena-Batista going on last. That couldn’t follow either of those matches. I’ve been thinking all along that Christian would win the MITB (which is becoming more obvious with the horrible match they’re building). So I’m thinking if they’re going that direction they should end it with Edge-Jericho. Have Edge win the title and while he’s celebrating with the fireworks and confetti have Christian’s music hit. making everyone think he’s going to steal Edge’s glory, when he walks out with the briefcase. Instead when he gets in the ring they raise the Big Gold Belt and the MITB briefcase and reunite. “Brothers” celebrate, great ending. Plus the following matches that could happen with Edge/Christian vs. Jericho/ANYONE on Earth would be amazing.

  • ReyTheHussein

Strictly as a timing thing, batista-cena.. only because the younglings will be most interested in that match and excited no matter when it comes on. the people who spend money on “i hate cena” shirts will sh*t on him regardless, and his fans in the live arena will also be giddy to see him.

in short, no one who cares about sequencing this much will be happy when cena comes out anyway–and taker vs hbk in a rematch going on last shouldn’t overshadow edge’s face turn & first title run as a face.

    (okay, i’m done.)

  • Michael L

The HHH/Jericho match was acceptable, although the storyline for the match should have been the storyline for the buildup—HHH seeking revenge on Jericho for putting him out, while Jericho tries to retain the title by any means necessary, which includes taking out his quads again. Unfortunately, the buildup involved the HHH/Stephanie saga, which did Jericho no favors and essentially killed him as a main eventer until 2008.

With that being said, as much as I like the idea of Jericho/Edge being the true main event, it will almost certainly not happen. I say put that match mid-show, and follow it with something minor. Then have the two other matches in succession–and I’d go with UT/HBK if only because nothing is going to be able to follow those two if the match is anywhere near as epic as last year’s.

  • Eric

Whichever title match comes before ‘Taker/HBK, I wouldn’t be surprised if Vince orders them to deliberately tone things down so as not to burn out the crowd before it and whatever they go with the actual main event.

  • Victor

I think Jericho/Edge has been getting short shrift in build up compared to the other two, so I suspect it doesn’t go last.

    Sad, really.

I think Taker/HBK might have to go first, and then have a palate cleanser. No matter what, something shocking is happening there, and some fans are going to be PISSED.

Throw the DIVA match on next or something for people to get their wind back.

  • sam

No matter which match will be the last but there will be huge twist guys just like at the elimination chamber and may be HHH or randy orton will walk out as wwe or world heavy weight champion. I am shure about that.

  • hamsandwich91

What about if Christian won MITB and then cashed in during cena/batista? Nobody wants to see either of them win.
Then have HBK vs Taker where im gonna guess: Vince will somehow get involved and screw Taker!
End the show with Edge/Y2J and Edge win, Christian comes out and both celebrate in the ring with their belts(like Benoit/Eddie at WM20) to end the show and send fans home happy.

For Me Wrestlemania Main Event should Be about The Champion and The Royal Rumble Winner, I mean thats the whole point of Winning it right? going to Wrestlemania´s Main Event? But as we Watched last year HBK vs Taker, is a match that NO ONE can Follow, plus there is to much on the line so SHAWN MICHAELS VS UNDERTAKER SHOULD BE THE MAIN EVENT, The Problem Here is That John Cena is going for the other title and he is WWE´s Poster Boy, so Batista vs Cena Would probably be the main event.

  • JIMMER

i think and hope that hbk wins at wrestlemania and ends the streak
