To Be Determined – Is John Morrison No Longer the Next Shawn Michaels?
by Raffi Shamir on May 13, 2010

Last Month WWE held another one of their periodic locker-room cleaning and among those released was one of the best athletes that competed in a WWE ring during the last decade and someone who years ago was destined to be a World Champion – Shelton Benjamin. Hearing the news that Shelton Benjamin was released made me wonder about a current star that only last year was heralded as the next Shawn Michaels, and that wrestler is John Morrison.

If we ignore Tough Enough, and we will because WWE does it, there are several parallels between Benjamin’s and Morrison’s careers. They both made their “official” debuts as members of tag teams that dominated their respective tag divisions (Team Angle and MNM). They are both amazing athletes and can steal the show if given the chance. They both impressed in top matches with established main eventers (Benjamin’s shocking matches with HHH and subsequent feud with Evolution, Morrison with Edge, Jericho and Mysterio last year). And yet more often than not, they were (and are) lost in the shuffle. In 2009 Morrison was wrestling main event matches on Smackdown, and this week he teamed with Santino Marella, Goldust and Yoshi Tatsu. How did that happen?

In 2007, after MNM’s split, Morrison moved to ECW and won that brand’s championship when Chris Benoit was too busy murdering his family and killing himself instead of winning that title. What followed was a good series of matches with CM Punk and it seemed like Morrison is on his way for greatness. He screwed up though, by juicing up, and while his singles push was halted, we got another show stealing tag team, when he joined forces with his then rival The Miz. I don’t think anyone expected this duo to become as big as they did, but pretty soon they started turning heads and won both sets of tag titles, and started appearing on all three shows almost every week. When the decision was finally made to break them up last year, Miz turned on him and went to Raw while Morrison was sent to Smackdown, presumably to become the main event star that he was destined to be.

And it sure seemed like it was going to happen. Suddenly Morrison was part of Smackdown top tier, and together with Chris Jericho, edge, CM Punk, Rey Mysterio and Jeff Hardy it seemed like we had a new Smackdown Six. He mixed it up with the best of them and never looked out of place, Morrison appeared to belong in the main event. Jim Ross was building him up and praising him non-stop, going as far as rightfully comparing him to a young Shawn Michaels. Almost everything pointed to John Morrison skyrocketing to the top of the card. But while this was happening, something fishy was also going on – he did not appear on Pay Per View. For several months, while he was stealing the show every week, he did not have a real feud or program, and other than a single PPV match with Shelton Benjamin Oh the irony), he did not appear on PPV for six months. Even after he won the IC title from Rey Mysterio on Smackdown, his planned title defense against Dolph Ziggler was pulled from PPV. WWE Writers did not help matters by having him cut stupid infantile promos on Ziggler (Can anyone say Mr. Ziggles?) rather than the cool promos that he cut as the Shaman of Sexy during his tag team days. The bipolar booking of Morrison continued when he first lost the IC title to Drew McIntyre, then got a World Championship shot at this year’s Elimination Chamber (When again, he looked like he belonged in the same chamber with The Undertaker of all people) but then could not get a spot on the Wrestlemania card without teaming with R Truth. His rollercoaster ride continued when he was drafted to Raw, where chances are he will be lost in the shuffle and the writers don’t seem to know how to properly push someone from the midcard to the main event.

So what’s up with Morrison? Why do the WWE brass change their minds about him and seem hot for him one week and cold the next one? Is it his promo skills? He proved that he could cut excellent promos as a heel, so it’s not like he’s incompetent on the mic. Is it his charisma? Please, he has so much of it that it’s pouring out of his ears. Is it the steroid use? It hasn’t hurt other wrestlers on the roster? Is it the unexpected success that Miz experienced since going alone? Why should that matter, both of them can be top stars. So what is it?

Sadly, I have no explanation for the way that WWE has treated Morrison, and now it seems like he’s headed for another tag team, this time with Bryan Danielson. It’s obvious that he has everything needed to carry a major title. Yes, I’m a John Morrison mark so I truly believed it when Jim Ross referred to him as the next Shawn Michaels and I still know that he has it in him. I want to see John Morrison make it to the next level and have a meaningful title reign, not like the one that Sheamus had or Jack Swagger’s started. I want John Morrison to be the next top WWE star. John Morrison deserves to be the next Shawn Michaels, not the next Shelton Benjamin. Make it so WWE, make it so.

We’re talking WWE here. they’re still tentative about pushing new/fresh talent even when their current main event scene is retiring, getting hurt, needing time off, leaving the promotion, etc. Could they build Morrison up to challenge Cena? a feud that’d be fresh and put on some quality matches? Naw.. after his I Quit Match with Batista, he’ll have another match with Batista… then it’s onto Edge (again).. then maybe triple threat with Edge/Orton.. then Orton again.. then Trips should be back! Although now that Sheamus is starting to get over, he might get thrown a bone now and then… and the ratings will continue to suffer.

WWE has always been apprehensive about putting “flippy” guys in top spots. For years Michaels was the best thing they had going besides Bret but instead they chose to run with Diesel because he was big and could work a more brawling-based style. Rey unfortunately only got his brief moment because of Eddie’s death, and even then was made to look incompetent. Punk had to change his style completely and work more ground-and-striking based attacks but also got saddled with a poor run like Rey. Morrison, despite being a product of WWE’s system, is a flippy guy. He can pull off amazing high spots and get great matches out of people, but he’s still just a flippy guy. Vince, if nothing else, is stuck in his ways: he always reverts back to hosses, he likes muscles, and he likes brawls. I’m sure he probably respects what Morrison does but he won’t give Morrison the chance unless either the audience demands it or he’s left with no other options.

That said, Morrison is a far better heel than he is a face. He can pull off a Shawn Michaels/Rick Rude arrogant pretty boy gimmick and he has a natural aura of douchiness about him. They should embrace it rather than trying to force him as a face.

I remember a while back one of the writers on this site (forget who) pointed out the general apprehensiveness to put over a midcard guy into the main event. Basically, the WWE draws more or less the same level of ratings no matter what they do right now (with slight variation) so getting behind someone strong enough to get them into the main event is rare. With some of the big guys like Kozlov and now Sheamus, they can push them as a monster, have them flirt with the main event, and then set them to simmer as a midcard talent until they want to/need to use them again. With the smaller guys, they’ll give them a sustained push for a while, and then pull the rug out from under them and see what happens. If nothing else they’ll have someone in the midcard the fans recognize that has some moves the fans will pop for.

Also, there is probably some sort of arcane “face/heel” ratio that needs to be kept, so Morrison as a passable face that gets some cheers for his moveset and entrance, is useful for them at the moment. If the team with Danielson is in the cards than I can see it eventually leading to a heel turn when the team (inevitably) breaks up. Since, like the heel/face ratio, there is also a limited number of tag team spots (apparently).

John Morrison was cast into the “innovative offense” mold of Jeff Hardy and RVD (ie the same 3 moves every match that violently halt my suspension of disbelief), and when they turned him face all of his interesting characteristics went out the window.

They need him to be a d*ckish heel again and have the fans turn him the way they did Orton. Or have him Heel it up on SD, Miz heel it up on Raw (they’re on the same brand but are supposed to say separated? really?) and see which one the audience turns and have ‘em collide.

I think that was my column. The general idea is that it doesn’t matter who is in the main event, how many times the matches are repeated, or how stale the roster may be, people watch WWE because it’s WWE. Fans associate WWE with pro wrestling. The only time they ever really stumble is if there’s a massive rivalry on Monday Night Football.

I don’t get it myself. There was NO reason to move him to Raw. I don’t know why the WWE stuck Big Show in a program with Swagger. Morrison and Swagger can be good foils for each other. Is a Big Show/Swagger program really going to put asses in the seats. It’s just another match on a PPV. Morrison and Swagger could of gelped cement each other as a top face and top heel on smackdown. I love me some WWE… I can’t believe Hall and Nash are tag champs again… I just threw up… but c’mon guys… Morrison could probably do a goddamned 720 splash if he wanted to. How is a guy like this not marketable. Last time I checked I didn’t see any Jack Swagger T-Shirts on Shopzone.

Relax guys. He’s “connecting with the crowd”. That is something that Shelton never was able to do no matter how many MITB spots he did. Sure he was an IWC golden boy, but c’mon face it, the rest of the audience used him for a piss break. And they have Morrison doing the sunglasses thing too, keeping the yungins (and their parents’ money) involved. Sure he was teamed with those 3, but he (and Santino who is a permanent joke now) is also what kept the majority of audience watching that segment.

The sad thing is Morrison is truly one of the better wrestlers on payroll. He’s one of the most entertaining wrestlers and, above all, has skill in an age that is desperatly failing to follow the Rock’s and Stone Cold’s of the Attitude Era. Hell, a lot of these guys are struggling to keep up with the Scott Too Hotty’s and Mr. Ass’s. Morrison could easily have gone toe-to-toe with a lot of those guys in the glory days of the greatest era in wrestling. The WWE is not pushing their brightest talent.

We do not need another HBK, we need an original like John Morrison who puts alot of heart and soul to put on a good show.Harry highpants can RIP. He had a good run, right? Now lets see what the new younger, better looking talent has got to offer. I for one am weary of all those older wrestling rivalries! It is much more interesting to watch them try to beat the hell out of the younger more spirited wrestlers, like John Morrison, THE Miz, Cody Rhodes etc. In the past year or so, John Morrison has had some fantastic matches against Mysterio, Jericho, Edge, Ziggler and Swagger. Give him more to do! Don`t be a DUMBASS VINCE MCMAHON!! With love Eliza
