10 Thoughts on WWE Raw 07.19.2010 feat. Randy Orton vs Edge vs Chris Jericho, Will John Cena Join the Nexus?
by Will Pruett on July 19, 2010

Welcome once again one and all to my own 10 Thoughts on WWE Monday Night Raw! Along with these thoughts, you can also check out a few blogs on itswilltime.wordpress.com (including why The Nexus does not need a leader and thoughts on TNA’s ECW invasion). Enough with the plugs, now onto the thoughts!

1. Really strong match to open the show. Edge, Jericho and Randy Orton all put on a great performance, especially considering the type of match they were in last night and how sore the three of them must be.

2. The Nexus made a strong statement in the beat down of Edge and especially Chris Jericho. I was happy to see this. They have the chops to stand alone as a group without another main event wrestler leading them. For more thoughts on this check out my blog on it at itswilltime.wordpress.com.

3. The twin segments with both John Cena and Sheamus apparently trying to join The Nexus were great. The Cena one was a great hook for the rest of the show and has assured that I will be watching. I would guess that the triple threat opened the show so Cena potentially joining The Nexus could be in the main event.

4. Tonight the Diva’s match had a purpose: to further the John Morrison vs Ted Dibiase feud. This is just about as useful as they can be.

5. I would definitely believe a Miz vs Sheamus feud, but I hope he holds on to the briefcase at least until the Survivor Series. I would also love to see The Miz actually challenge the champion ahead of time as opposed to capitalizing on the opportunity. He has been made to look credible enough to do so.

6. It didn’t make for exciting TV, but Evan Bourne taking a long period of time to make it to the ring was definitely realistic and I appreciated that. Remember earlier this year when Sheamus would have beaten Evan Bourne before the commercial break even started? Bourne has come a long way.

7. I was on the edge of my seat when it looked like Miz would be cashing in the Money in the Bank. I must question the rule that the champion must be conscious in order to be cashed in on. I know every one of them has been, but no one has really been in any state to compete since cash in’s regularly come after matches.

8. I am so thankful that WWE decided to have the Money in the Bank contract stored in a briefcase in 2005. They could have easily had a clipboard with a contract attached to it. Since they began that tradition (and since Edge carried it for close to a year) that briefcase is now one of the most dangerous props in WWE.

Bonus Thought #1: I can’t wait to buy one of the WWE straws at 7-11. Feel free to judge me. My wife already is.

9. If this were the late 1990′s The Nexus would have offered John Cena one of their snazzy t-shirts, which he would have promptly put on and then torn off. I miss the days when alliances changed as often as the wind and t-shirts were the only way to keep them straight.

10. For my final thought today, I will actually be giving you six thoughts, one on each of the choices for Team Cena at Summerslam:

  • Edge – This was a logical choice, given the beat down earlier in the night. I thought that WWE succeeded in making Edge and Cena uniting a big moment.
  • John Morrison – Being on this team is a good step for JoMo. He doesn’t have the mic skills to stand all alone, but he can be a nice physical part of Team Cena and get his main event feet wet.
  • R-Truth – I am not annoyed with this choice, but I did hate how long his entrance music played for. R-Truth’s music does not make him seem like a serious wrestler entering a major feud to defend Raw.
  • The Great Khali – Sad. Angry. Confused. This is just baffling to me. What did The Nexus do to Khali? I understand why you would want him on your team, but it definitely brings down the work rate of the match.
  • Chris Jericho – Another logical move, much like Edge before him. Jericho adds a lot to this team, and it will be nice to see him working as a face again.
  • Bret Hart – This was a great surprise, but it worries me. I know that Bret has a score to settle with these men, but he is a man that can be easily taken out by The Nexus, thus leaving Team Cena a man short early in the match.

That’s all for this week folks! I will be back on Thursday morning bright and early with an action packed edition of The People’s Column. Until then, be sure to check out itswilltime.wordpress.com for all of your wrestling thought needs!

Team Cena won’t be a man short, HHH will round out the team by the time we get to Summerslam. ONE of the other guys will go out injured like R-Truth did for Money in the Bank. I want it to be R-Truth again, because I can’t stand him or his style.

The looks that Edge gave both Cena and Jericho upon standing side-by-side with them were fantastic. It shows that they may hate each other yeah, but they’re uniting for a common goal.

That was one of the ONLY things the WWE got right during the ECWCW (Alliance) invasion angle years ago. You knew guys like Austin and Jericho and Kane hated each other, but they bonded together putting aside their differences.

Random note, but I also was marking out when Miz was trying to cash in. I literally jumped out of my desk chair and sat on my bed closer to the TV. I was truly excited and anxious to see what would happen.

Let the “Daniel Bryan returning to take Bret Hart’s spot on Team Cena” rumours begin.

  • Mark Allen

    I second everything Danny said…

  • Tony

Despite reading the news last week, when Cena and Edge parted to reveal the 7th member to Team Cena, I really expected HHH to walk out.

  • Damnufine

The Miz isn’t very good. He’s still not stellar in the ring and he botches promos as much as anyone. Since we all know the mid-card don’t write their own characters it’s not really any charisma on his part that’s getting him over. I don’t know why the internet likes him so much. I really don’t. Isn’t it saying something that his “rookie” Palmer Cannon has the exact same promo style and seems more natural at it?

Cena’s dream team surprised me in several ways. First, I expected Evan Borne to be on the team. Second, I still suspect that Chris Jericho is connected with the Nexus- remember that he betrayed team WWF during the invasion storyline. Third, Bret Hart is more a symbol than a legitimate wrestler. Expect him to put a sharpshooter on a downed Nexus, thats about it. Fourth, Kali made little sense until I remember that his manager had said Kali would not be able to handle the Nexus. HHH returning would be great, but what I would LOVE to see is the Undertaker (and maybe Kane) appearing in the ring after a lights out and taking out the Nexus for good (Yes I know Smackdown is on another planet most of the time but it would be cool :) )

R-Truth being on the team seems odd, since he seems to be in the Umaga roll to Miz’s CM Punk at the moment … he can’t cash in until he gets past Truth, which could have made for a US Title match at Summerslam. As such … where is Miz going to be on the card.

That said, there is almost definitely going to be a suprise entrant or two (HHH and/or Bryan Danielson) which they don’t want to advertise (to keep it a suprise). And, since you don’t just want to say there is a “suprise entrant”, which would telegraph the suprise as much as just saying who it is, they instead have a couple of people that will need to be replaced at the last minute.

  • Anthony J. Zinzi

R-Truth is a logical choice since he was an NXT pro for season one…

  • Big Dave

I like the speculation about Brian Danielson as a surprise member, especially after Barrett said a few weeks back that we’d never see him again. That would make for a great angle. Also, I believe Hart has an insurance policy with Lloyd’s of London which would preclude him from doing any substantial in-ring work. Hart should be the odd man out. Maybe he will be revealed as the mystery GM?

  • http://itswilltime.wordpress.com Will Pruett

HHH is injured from a surgery and will not be appearing at Summerslam, despite what WWE Magazine says. I was also thinking that Bryan Danielson would come out for Team Cena, which might be why I was disappointed by Bret Hart.

  • http://itaintthatserious.wordpress.com ReyTheHussein

I don’t think Khali, Truth, or Hart will ever make it to SummerSlam.

I like the twist on the MITB cash-in rule. Seems logical.

As for SummerFest, er, Slam, I don’t think Team Cena should win at all, nor do I think those 3 I mnentioned above should be replaced if I’m right and they get taken out. 7-4 is the Nexus way, and this angle DEFINITELY has legs ’til Survivor Series, and wouldn’t a still-in-tact Nexus be absolutely horrifyingly scary for the Royal Rumble?

    Let it ride, Vince!

  • Heather

Rey…that is brilliant! I was thinking Nexus can take this thing all the way to Mania. The WWE Championship, the unified tag titles, and the IC title each should fall on a Nexus member (Gabriel goes for the IC, Slater and Shepfield for the tag belts, and Barrett for the WWE championship) and each should win “relatively” clean. Then the following night the GM/Brainchild gets revealed and we can begin the “bigger picture” reasoning…and start planting the unraveling seeds around next year’s SummerFest, er Slam. (Did you hear FogHat’s going to be at SummerFest too Rey? lol)

  • sideshowbob

Here comes at the Summerslam ideas! Americas Dream Dusty Roads can get his kids all together to fight Nexus! Wine and dine with kings son of a plummer. See he can get golddust too because that is his son too and they can all wear makeup and polkadots then Codie can turn on them then and say like see I told you I was dashing.

I was really p*ssed that Khali and Bret got in insteead of Danielson and Evan Bourne.
