10 Thoughts on WWE Raw for 12.27.2010 – Nexus Aligns with CM Punk, Miz beats down Lawler
by Will Pruett on December 28, 2010

Welcome everyone and I hope you all have had a wonderful Christmas. As I sit down to watch Raw tonight after eating some delicious leftovers, I’m happy to be covering the last Raw of 2010. Make sure you’re getting all of the Will in your life you can handle by following me on twitter at twitter.com/itswilltime.

Now, on with the thoughts!

1. Isn’t it interesting that CM Punk, a heel, usually speaks the truth about the lead babyface he is up against? He says that Cena lied to the fans and other wrestlers. He said that Jeff Hardy was a drug addict and today’s announcement of a guilty plea shows that he is. Why is Punk a heel again?

2. Why isn’t John Cena actually taking CM Punk seriously? Joking Cena does not make money for anyone. All he does is make a couple people laugh and show that Cena is better than the heel. If Cena actually lost and was in jeopardy (also, he’d have to show some fear or trepidation) people would be more interested in his character and willing to spend money to see him in action.

3. Ted DiBiase went from an almost main event program again Randy Orton (which never happened, but was planned) to losing to Daniel Bryan to now losing to Santino in about a minute. How did WWE mess up on an almost main event guy so easily?

4. I liked the backstage interesting between Miz, John Morrison and Alex Riley. Adding a stipulation to the WWE Championship match does not excite me, but seeing Riley and Morrison with something on the line does. On a side note, I am not happy to see Morrison get his shot on Raw next week. I’d rather see him wait till the Rumble. That said, we should get a hell of a match next week.

5. Poor Tyson Kidd. Why did they feed him and his bodyguard to Mark Henry? Henry won’t get more or less over from it and Kidd’s act is so new that he needs wins.

6. I liked Miz and Jerry Lawler’s interactions in and out of the ring tonight. Their match was solid with Miz having a good excuse for taking a loss. Aside from their match, Miz’s beatdown on The King established Miz as dangerous, which he has needed in this Championship run. He also showed that he can hurt someone outside the ring for next week’s falls count anywhere match.

7. Wow. It is rare that we see a match started with no introductions during a break. Daniel Bryan deserves to be on the show every week, but if this is the best they can do, just give him 15 minutes in the Superstars main event.

8. Sheamus and Randy Orton had a good, but unexciting match. There was nothing really on the line for the two of them and that made it a little less interesting to me. This is where a ranking system (not TNA’s joke of one) would be great. Mention that they are fighting to get another shot at the WWE Championship in the future and that this match will directly correlate to their rankings.

9. I am shocked to hear that this crowd was so silent for the Nexus beatdown of John Cena. I know that we have seen it many times, but it was seriously basically silent in the arena until CM Punk arrived. WWE has an uphill battle in making all of us believe that The Nexus matters again.

10. CM Punk breaking out the Nexus armband was a nice moment. WWE needed to do something with this faction to get them over after allowing Cena to bury them constantly. CM Punk has had his opportunity as a faction leader before and showed that he is capable. The new challenge is to make sure that the individuals in The Nexus get over while under the tutelage of CM Punk.

10A. Does this mean that The Nexus is also Straight Edge?

That’s all for me tonight folks. I’ll be back later in the week with a review of Goldust’s new book and possibly some best of the year type columns.

Why did they waste TV time portraying Kidd and his bodyguard as an imposing force, and then job them out immediately, without even getting heat back by jumping Henry. That was one of the most disturbingly clueless segments in recent memory. EVERYONE looks bad. Kidd, because he got squashed. His bodyguard, who can’t even handle a midcarder, and most importantly, Daniel Bryan, for being scared of such an obviously nonthreatening duo. Just an absolute waste of two segments, that hurt everyone involved.

I heard CM Punk chants and I think Nexus was VERY justified in beating Cena up. I like the fact that they behave like ol school wrestlers in that they are ambitious, just want to beat and punish their enemies and are a united faction. Punk is simply gold. Nexus is going to eventually turn face (at the very least with adult males) and Cena (I agree he’s too dismissive of threats)will turn heel. Cena has been “Mr. Funny pants” since his feud with Batista. Batista was serious and doing his best mic work while Cena was making up fake curse words like ” Holy Fudge and Mustard”.

How many more times could they have Cena say “CM Sucks” in a two minute period, just pleading for the crowd to join in. They didn’t, though, which makes this feud rather interesting.

Most other heels Cena has faced were not as cool or overly cheered like Punk is here. They could really rally around this and have a double turn. Ah, but there I go again, wishing for a Cena turn that will not be.

And it is not that Cena jokes around. It is that he jokes around but never takes a threat serious. He goes into ‘let me talk straight’ mode, then cracks jokes. Hopefully these guys will just beat the shit ~suggest less offensive word here~ out of him for simply being a smug prick ~suggest less offensive word here~. He is following that same “I can’t take any opponent as a threat” pattern that the Rock did. Then along came Brock Lesnar…

RAW should’ve been re-named Botchamania for one night because that’s all it was, botches. Anyway for anyone that likes Charlie Reneke he posted a new review up, here it is http://thewrestlingpress.com/?p=1442

    CM Punk is god…nuff said!

    1. Many heels (Jericho comes to mind, and Bret after Wrestlemania 13) speak the truth. Telling the truth doesn’t necessarily make you a face, especially if it’s something the audience doesn’t want to hear. Also, in many cases, the heels are holding the faces to a standard they themselves don’t hold themselves to. [Albeit Punk's Straight Edge lifestyle is an exception].

    2. Cena is “reverting” to his default persona because he (thought) his feud with Nexus was finally over. Now, as Cena gets into trouble, he has to BECOME more serious. An always serious Cena isn’t as effective. Showing a change in emotion indicates the opponent is a threat and is getting under his skin. As long as Cena doesn’t keep it up as the feud progresses, a return to norm should just indicate the end of a previous feud before the beginning of another.

    3. Did the WWE screw it up, or did Ted? The most recent run, despite a botched start [that one segment of getting back his title and giving him up that was an extended set up for a Damn ending] is a basic losing streak gimmick. He wants to earn a title instead of just inheriting it. He loses to Bryan (who now has the Bellas, allowing for Maryse to get more involved). Having failed, he then goes after another champion, Santino (who has Snuka’s daughter with him, again allowing Maryse to be more involved in the matches) and loses again. He’s been slowly showing signs of anger, mostly at Maryse. The losing streak is leading to a break down and probably a break up … and hopefully give him a ruthless streak that can lead to some wins. It’s a story arc where, in the end, the character develops and grows by finding the missing piece (or eliminating the weak link) holding him back from winning. It doesn’t always work, but that’s the story they are telling with Teddy now. Considering that he’s had a number of failed pushes, the “frustrated with not being able to get it right” gimmick may even be close to the truth, which often leads to better results.

    4. I see two possibilities with the early title shot. I forget when exactly, but there was a brief feud over the Chrismas/New Years break over the world title that ended up going nowhere … I can’t even remember who was involved, but I’m thinking Jericho for some reason. The other possibility is the Rock/Mankind feud. It’s possible that Morrison could get the win on Raw, only to lose the title back to Miz at the Rumble. It’s risky, but the Rock/Mankind feud built both guys up to main eventers in a short time, and got Rock ready for the Wrestlemania main event with Austin. I doubt it, but it’s an interesting possibility.

    7. The problem is that they don’t really have a contender for Bryan … of course it would help if they didn’t bury Tyson. They are keeping Bryan strong, but they shouldn’t get too complacent like with Dolph on Smackdown where he’s always winning and thus none of the contenders seem at all credible.

    8. With the Rumble coming up, it could have been as simple as either “gaining momentum for the Rumble”, or having it actually help to determine the order if they started advertising it. The announcers should be able to make a match feel important without the match having a ranking/stip attached to it, but that is something often left out by Cole and the King.

10/10A. I think they may take this opportunity to trim down the Nexus again. It may be as simple as Barrett being deposed with the rest following Punk, but it could probably benefit from sending some members to Smackdown, although that probably won’t be until the official draft.

I have been watching some old CM Punk stuff on youtube, and apparently he was a Raven disciple/wannabe. It would be interesting if the remade Nexus and Punk as Raven and Flock redux.

  • incognito

    @billthedrick

That was an interesting time for Punk. He was a Raven disciple in TNA, while feuding with Raven in ROH. The Raven feud had some of Punk’s best promos, in my opinion.

As for Ted Dibiase Jr., they may be going for what Wally said, or he may be the next guy they “future endeavor.”

  • Dan Smith

Just a thought off topic, but wouldnt it be great if the last man eliminated at the Royal Rumble got a shot at the I-C or US title.. I think it would amp up the intrigue of the match and give a new spin on the programs stagnant booking..

Does anybody else think the Bella’s are setting up Bryan for something?
