WWF Superstars

I haven’t been able to do my review of WrestleMania XII yet, so this week we’ll catch up on the 1994 season of WWF Superstars as we slowly work our way towards the 1994 King of the Ring. The WrestleMania XII review will be posted next week.

-The end of last week’s Lex Luger-Jeff Jarrett King of the Ring qualifying match is shown.

-Jerry “the King” Lawler interviews Harvey Wippleman about Adam Bomb’s King of the Ring qualifying match against the 1-2-3 Kid on today’s show. Wippleman says that Bomb will win easily.

-Vince McMahon and Lawler are in the booth.

-Opening Non-Title Contest: Diesel (Intercontinental Champion) vs. PJ Walker:

Diesel overpowers Walker as Lawler hypes an interview with Bret Hart on Raw. Walker gets in a couple of dropkicks and a clothesline, but runs into a big boot. Diesel gives the sign for the Jackknife but delivers a sidewalk slam instead. A Jackknife gets the one foot pin at 1:54. Decent squash, but considering the size disparity they should have had Diesel use more power moves.

-The Smoking Gunns vs. “Iron” Mike Sharpe & Tony DeVito:

The jobbers get Billy into their corner at the beginning of the match, but jobber miscommunication allows Billy to take them out. DeVito gets some token shots in on Bart, but Bart floats over on a blind charge and the Gunns go to work on the arm as per usual. A Super Sidewinder finishes at 3:03. Average squash that came off more like a Gunns-DeVito handicap match.

-McMahon announces that Chief Jay Strongbow, Freddie Blassie, Gorilla Monsoon, James Dudley, Arnold Skaaland, Bobo Brazil, and Buddy Rogers will be inducted into the WWF Hall of Fame.

-Stan Lane provides some random Live Event News.

-King of the Ring Qualifying Match: Adam Bomb (w/Harvey Wippleman) vs. The 1-2-3 Kid:

This is the last King of the Ring qualifying match that will be aired on Superstars and the winner will face Jeff Jarrett at the King of the Ring pay-per-view. McMahon and Lawler make it seem that the Kid is a huge underdog here, but I disagree because the Kid was actually winning matches prior to this encounter and the Kid beat Bomb at the previous year’s Survivor Series. Unsurprisingly, Bomb dominates the beginning with power moves. Bomb crotches himself on the middle rope when he tries to jump on the Kid and the Kid blasts him with a spinning heel kick for two. Wippleman jumps on the apron and distracts the referee when the Kid connects with a flying body press. Bomb comes back with a sidewalk slam as Kwang comes to ringside, but he accidentally spits green mist into Bomb’s face and the Kid schoolboys Bomb for the “upset” at 5:13. Was it really necessary to protect Bomb like that with this finish? This was leading to Bomb’s face turn, but this match made the Kid look REALLY weak. After the match, Wippleman and Kwang run back to the dressing room. Rating: *½

-Yokozuna (w/Jim Cornette & Mr. Fuji) vs. Corey Student:

Student gets into a slugfest with Yokozuna and that goes about as well as you’d expect. Yokozuna slowly pounds away on Student and a belly-to-belly suplex gets the pin at 2:09.

-Todd Pettengill delivers the King of the Ring report.

-Irwin R. Schyster vs. Mike Maraldo:

IRS works a faster pace than usual at the beginning of the match as he pounds on Maraldo and tosses him out of the ring. Maraldo floats over a suplex and gets a fluke schoolboy for two. IRS slams Maraldo and locks in the Penalty, which looks 100 times more devastating that John Cena’s STF, and it gets the submission at 1:25. Good match from IRS because the rest holds were non-existent.

-A tow truck driver says that he saw the Undertaker lying in the middle of traffic. Hey, that’s what feuds with Giant Gonzalez can do to a man.

-Ted DiBiase is in a funeral parlor and he says that he’s had contact with the Undertaker and that the Undertaker will soon serve his interests.

-The Heavenly Bodies (w/Jim Cornette) vs. Mike Davis & Phil Apollo:

Apollo offers his hand in friendship like an idiot and Jimmy del Ray makes him pay for it. The Bodies work go old school and work behind the referee’s back as McMahon hypes the Tatanka-Jimmy del Ray King of the Ring qualifying match that is going to be on Raw this Monday. Hmmm…I wonder who’s going to win that qualifying match? After enduring two minutes of punishment, Apollo tags in Davis, but his dropkick misses and the Bodies finish him with a powerbomb/second role elbow drop combo at 3:05. This was much better than the Bodies last Superstars squash.

-Stan Lane talks about the King of the Ring tournament.

-Footage of Harvey Wippleman and Adam Bomb having a confrontation in the locker room after Bomb’s match is shown.

-Wippleman tries to talk about who’s corner he’s going to be in next week, but his mic doesn’t work.

-Tune in next week to see Kwang face Adam Bomb! Also, Lex Luger will appear on the Heartbreak Hotel.

The Final Report Card: Average show this week as Bomb and the Kid put on a decent match and the squashes that filled out the card were hit and miss. Bomb’s face turn is on the horizon but it didn’t propel him out of the lower midcard, which was a shame because he could work good matches with most of the top stars on the roster. Oh and by the way, the WWF must’ve realized that Tatanka-Jimmy del Ray wasn’t a good qualifying match because they changed it to Tatanka-Crush.

Show Evaluation: Neutral
