That Being Said: Shaemus .vs. Mark Henry, SummerSlam 2011
by Blair A. Douglas on August 14, 2011

Welcome to a special bonus edition of “That Being Said”! Today, I bring you coverage of the feud that is the highlight of SmackDown and the crown jewel of WWE. The unstoppable force meets the immoveable object. The biggest feud of the summer. The match where it is ALL on the line. Careers will be made and broken. Shaemus .vs. Mark Henry.

Recently, Mark Henry has experienced a career rebirth of sorts. He has diversified his persona into being a bully. I know that’s probably hard for anyone to envision, other than the 2 or 3 identical runs to this one that he already had last decade doing the exact same thing, but this time, it’s completely different.

Also recently, Shaemus was promoted onto the A show of the WWE, the flagship broadcast program we all know as SmackDown. Some will tell you this is an extreme demotion after an extraordinarily unsuccessful title run followed by a year of doing absolutely nothing to the point of not even being able to make it onto the WrestleMania card. As we all know though, those people are SMARKS. There is NO better place for Shaemus to start an amazing face turn than on SmackDown, by taking on the unstable BEAST that has been terrorizing the WWE Universe, who once impregnated Mae Young with a hand.

Or something.

Let me tell you, when the graphic of these two came up, the crowd immediately became UNGLUED. As the video package said, never before has Mark Henry been as dangerous before as he is now. He is on a path of destruction. NO ONE is safe from him Vader-bombing chairs onto peoples legs. He may be the most unstoppable force in the history of WWE. The video package really highlighted just how into the Shaemus the entire SmackDown audience is.

That match is now here, presented for your enjoyment.

Future Match Of The Year Candidate
Shaemus .vs. Mark Henry

Mark Henry came out to an AMAZING heel reaction. The entire crowd was on their feet.  One guy in the front row even gave him a thumbs down, the rest of the front row was so intimidated and in awe of Mark Henry that they didn’t even budge or make an expression. Now it’s time to bring out the challenger… IT’S A SHAME TO CLAIM THE FAME… he comes out to an amazing baby face reaction. It reminded me of the reactions that Ultimate Warrior used to get, and really, as we all know, Shaemus is the MOST ultimate warrior.

The bell rings. Here we go. Shaemus runs into Henry and falls down. Henry then punches him a couple of times. Michael Cole is talking about what a bully Mark Henry is and how impressed he is that Shaemus is standing up to him. I’m sure they would have mentioned how Shaemus was bullying people up until about a month ago if their attention wasn’t so focused on this awesome match.

Shaemus is now fighting back with… clubs… he hits about 3 of them and you can hear the reaction from the crowd. Henry slaps Shaemus on the back and Shaemus reacts to this by jumping over the rope and out of the ring. Henry then saunters outside and tosses Shaemus back into the ring. Then he runs into Shaemus again. Just as the diversity of this offensive onslaught was about to become too much, Mark Henry hits a splash and gets 2. A duelling chant starts that clearly the entire crowd is in on.

Mark Henry then jumps on Shaemus while he hangs on the ropes, and slides through to the outside. (Okay, that’s admittedly kind of a cool move.) Shaemus tries to fight back, then eats a backbreaker. Mark Henry raises his arms to a chorus of boos. The crowd has not sat down this entire time, this is like watching Gladiator. Mark Henry picks Shaemus up, and gives him an over-the-shoulder backbreaker. Shaemus is clearly in agony and powers out to a thunderous ovation, only to get tossed into the rope by Henry. I have no idea how Punk / Cena is going to follow this.

Henry goes for a Vader Bomb, but misses. Michael Cole sells that Shaemus HAS to take advantage. Mark Henry and Shaemus are both down, equally hurt, despite this being the only move Mark has taken. Shaemus is up. He axe-handles Henry, proving he is very much capable of matching Henry’s move diversity, then hits a running DOUBLE axe-handle to take Henry down.

Shaemus drapes Henry over the ropes, and hits him on the chest 4 times.

Booker T: Whoa.

Then they run into each other again. THIS is sports entertainment story-telling. Take that, Flippy Kingston! They both make their way back up, and then Shaemus hits a flying SHOULDERBLOCK that would have made Diesel at SummerSlam 1994 proud. Intensity is flowing through Shaemus as he tries to hit the kick that is every bit as devastating as Matt Morgan’s, but Henry ducks and gives him ANOTHER clothesline! Shaemus ducks ANOTHER clothesline, and good luck trying to keep track of the different moves used in this one! Shaemus hits the CARBON FOOTPRINT to send Henry to the outside. FEEL THE INTRIGUE.

Henry picks up and runs him into the ring post. Then he runs him through the barricade. The crowd gives a reaction exactly equal to when Brock Lesnar and Big Show broke the ring on SmackDown. That’s exactly how devastating it was. Henry goes back into the ring, the referee is counting him out.

Shaemus is crawling back towards the ring… slowly… clearly the entire crowd is behind their Irish hero Shaemus, but clearly the onslaught from the World’s Strongest Man was too much for Shaemus, and he is understandably counted out.

Winner: Mark Henry

What a fucking awesome match. It rocked me like a hurricane. And lucky for us, it doesn’t look like this feud will be ending! This is an ingenious move on the part of WWE. This feud is too red-hot to end it on a single match. They need to make sure to capitalize on the cash cow that is this amazing rivalry. SmackDown’s rating is sure to go through the roof now. Whatever else it is that shows on Friday nights may as well pack it in now.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go rock out to whoever this fool is with the annoying squeaky voice and watch the girls with him dance around like strippers who aren’t stripping.

    Blair: I LOL’d

  • Blair A. Douglas

This isn’t the actual article, so I can break kayfabe now. Anyone who was into this, I have to ask you a question. What the f*ck is wrong with you?!?!

  • Steven Gepp

Come now, Blair! Didn’t you see the eternal struggle writ large in this epic encounter? The two men represent the downtrodden currently rioting in England – the black youths who have borne the brunt of years of abuse and the Irish who have been downtrodden for centuries. While the skills displayed may not have have been technically proficient, the underlying sociological themes of the underclasses fighting amongst themselves while the overlords look on make if a fascinating study into the human condition.

  • Blair A. Douglas

Thanks, I’d love an omelette right about now.

  • http://twitter.com/pulseglazer Aaron Glazer

    The match was fine.

  • Kyle Fitta

I agree with Glazer. The match was fine. It wasn’t goundbreaking nor insulting, just a middle of the road match. In the end of the day, the match got over what it was aiming for.

  • Kyle Fitta

    Btw, it’s Sheamus not Shaemus.

  • sideshowbob

The match was fine? I think given the competitors, we may be being rough on the rating. While no technical masterpiece, this was as good as mark Henry gets. If this isn’t the best match of his career, someone needs to refresh my memory. Given that it is mark f’n Henry, this was superb… Seriously, what match has he ever had better?

  • James Alsop

I love your “crowd-reaction-ometer.” Such an accurate way of measuring talent…

The crowd didn’t come unglued for Daniel Bryan, Beth Phoenix or Christian either… They clearly all suck. Glad we got to the bottom of that.

On the other hand, Kevin Nash might have got the reaction of the night! He should absolutely be main-eventing NOW.

People didn’t buy Summerslam for Sheamus / Henry. No one expected them to. That’s why this wasn’t the main event. Both men are being used extremely well at the moment, though, and both came out of this match looking stronger than they did when they went in. Which is all that any match which hopes to further two characters and a feud should aim to do.
I can’t remember the last match featuring AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, Christopher Daniels, or even Kurt Angle which achieved that.
It wasn’t a 5-star classic, it didn’t need to be, and no one expected it to be. It was, however, a success. I know it’s not cool to approve of a Mark Henry angle, though, so I’d better keep my mouth shut, right?

  • CJ

“IT’S A SHAME TO CLAIM THE FAME” really?
    “Shaemus”

It’s obvious that you barely keep up with WWE.

The match was fine. It was never gonna be a 5 star mat classic. Sheamus, despite whatever you may think, is getting over as a babyface. And Mark Henry is getting some good heat…

Just because YOU don’t see the potential in Sheamus, Mark Henry, or this feud doesn’t mean that alot of fans don’t either…

  • Blair A. Douglas

Ha. I knew this would happen.

First of all, everyone, I don’t care how you spell Shaemus’ name, and neither will you in a couple of years. In fact, from now on, that’s how I spell it on purpose. CJ, I have no idea what Shaemus’ theme music says, all I know is that it’s terrible and that was my rough translation of it. Alsop, you’re certainly right that people care way more about Kevin Nash than they do Shaemus and Mark Henry combined, and also, you never heard me say that Bryan or Christian got great reactions anywhere, did you? But they certainly got some good crowd reactions during their matches. Shaemus / Barrett got one small pop for Henry busting Shaemus through the barrier, and that died down awful quick.

As Sideshow Bob said, GIVEN THE COMPETITORS, the match was as good as it was going to be, and as good as Mark Henry gets. I guess I differ from all of you in that it’s tough for me to be like “wow, this match is going to suck donkey balls, but it’s a Mark Henry match, so it will be good on that basis.” I’m not saying Shaemus got no cheers or anything, I’m saying what little he did get was pathetic for some big baby face turn that you’re all excited about.

Anyway kids, relax. It’s a satire. The PPV was fine. There’s nothing wrong with having the match on there. But this match was the worst match on the card, and the crowd reacted to it as such. People buttlove the WWE right now because of one hot angle, but that doesn’t’ make every match good. That’s what’s so funny to me about this. And if it makes you feel better, I had fun watching it for humor’s sake.

  • Mike Gojira

Folks, this is what’s called “heckling.” The more you try to make Blair see the forest for the trees, the less likely he’ll agree with you.

Just accept that he doesn’t enjoy the latest crop of WWE wrestlers (Miz, Sheamus, Barrett, del Rio, etc) and move on.

He barely watches unless he Youtubes (did I just make that a verb?) the matches and honestly is not that invested in the product; hence his reactions.

This is like a reverse-TNA situation. Odd.

Anywho, always enjoy reading your opinions, Blair.

  • Blair A. Douglas

I just watched an entire 3-hour PPV. I saw all the guys you mentioned on there. Still though, it was light-years ahead of anything TNA has done in years, outside of that X-Division PPV that everyone’s forgotten about already.

  • Mike Gojira

I realize that you watched the entire PPV. There was no SMARKasm (see? Humor!) in what I said before. You’ve publicly stated that you don’t enjoy the guys I mentioned, and I’m okay with that.

  • Blair A. Douglas

SMARKASM is an awesome term. Keep using that. I’m going to go ahead and call SMARKgasm for myself.

  • Owangotang

I’m both shocked and appalled that you did not love this match Blair! These two behemoths were throwing nuclear bomb-type blows at one another. We’re all lucky L.A. wasn’t leveled in the process!

Smarkasm aside (and yes that is a fantastic term), I would not mind seeing Mark Henry beat Orton for the World Title. Henry has been around for forever and he’s finally being booked as a killer monster. He’s not going to revolutionize wrestling but as a heel he’s fine.

Also, when you mentioned Ultimate Warrior in reference to Shaemus it made me think “Why the hell doesn’t this guy sprint to the ring, shake the ropes and go nuts?” I’ve always wondered why WWE hasn’t had a non-comic relief guy copy the most successful elements of Warrior’s entrance. That entrance alone pushed him to enough success to pin Hogan in Hogan’s prime (albeit at the end of it). Shaemus could make it work, maybe.

  • Blair A. Douglas

    AXE-HANDLE!!! AXE-HANDLE!!! DOUBLE AXE-HANDLE!!! AXE-HANDLE!!! AXE-HANDLE!!! AXE-HANDLE!!! FLYING AXE-HANDLE!!! WHAT A MANEUVER!!! AXE-HANDLE!!!

    MOTY.

  • Mike Gojira

Henceforth, I am the originator of the term “smarkasm.” Hooray!

  • kliq

Apparently, not even the IWC’s newfound love for Mark Henry can save him from the wrath of Blair… :)

Anyway, here’s the deal with Mark Henry (at least the way I see it):
He’s bad. He’s always been bad. And he’s doing it since 1996. That’s 11 years (and counting) of being huge, intimidating, and bad. Now the problem is, every two or three years, WWE decides to use him as a monster (for everyone in this collective amnesia, I’d like to reference the main event of Royal Rumble 2006). When he’s being used as comic relief, he’s having sex with ridiculously old women or dancing with leprechauns while wearing a tiny green hat. That sounds terrible. But get this: when he is a monster, he in on PPV cards. So I for one like it better when he’s juggling Somalian midget-quintuplets on a two-minute RAW segment.
But enough of the smarkasm (better use it before it’s copyrighted), here’s a real worry of mine.

While the pop at the end of the match was for Sheamus going through the barricade (crushing innocent bystander PWG-alumni in the process), it was a pop nonetheless. The crowd, on the other hand, was silent all throughout the Daniel Bryan-Wade Barrett match. Two or three more mutefests like this, and there goes the briefcase, I fear…

  • flamingwombat

    Sheamus\Mark Henry 1. Blair 0.

  • Blair A. Douglas

Yeah, those dudes totally axe-handled me last night. Maybe even that awesome flying axe-handle that Shaemus threw. If you liked this, you’ll LOVE Gunner / Crimson, so I’m going to go ahead and recommend Bound For Glory for all of you.

  • flamingwombat

What’s funny is, when I watched the match and saw/heard the heel reaction for Henry and the pop for Sheamus, then the perfectly acceptable wrestling that followed, I was looking forward to seeing if you would eat some yummy crow here on the site. Alas, I was wrong :)

You at least won’t acknowledge that the crowd was way into wanting to see Sheamus beat the count back into the ring AND the sound of disappointment when the match ended? Also, don’t you find Henry somewhat attractive?

  • Blair A. Douglas

You didn’t hear that, because it didn’t happen. I couldn’t eat the crow if I wanted to, because the crow doesn’t exist. Again too, there are other columns on the site that say the same thing, so I’m not alone here as I originally thought I was. As I said, there was a small pop for the slam through the table, and yeah, there was a small crowd hoping he’d make it back into the going. I don’t no about “way into wanting it” because it was still pretty damn silent in there compared to other matches. Bryan’s kick to the head got a bigger reaction.

Seriously, I need Wheeler to start recapping the PPV or SmackDown. He gets it, and people listen to him. Nobody listens to me.

  • flamingwombat

I think nobody listens to you because you blatantly ignore crowd reaction (like this match) and positive comments about said match (the majority seem to have found this match perfectly fine) in order to serve your own biases. I get that you are going for the heel columnist role, but you need to argue against things that are more subjective. When a match gets a good reaction and you say it doesn’t, well you’re just arguing against the truth as opposed to just giving an opinion.

  • Blair A. Douglas

Heel columnist role?!?! I don’t even know what that is.

The thing is dude, I don’t let what is popular with wrestling fans influence my opinion of what I find good and what I find bad. I wrote down what I saw from the crowd and what I thought about the match. I’m not alone in thinking this match was a waste, but even if I was, I would still say it was a waste. I don’t care what anyone else thinks. Clearly we have a different opinion of what is a good reaction.

And again, Wheeler, just to use an example, said in the intro to his column that the match was just one match in a “series of forgettable matches”, but that the card overall was fine. Which is exactly what I’ve said. I even said there was nothing wrong with having this match on there. People need matches like these to answer text messages and hit the concession stands.

  • flamingwombat

But you’re the one taking the popular opinion and running with it. If Mark Henry is in a match/angle it has to suck. That’s the prevailing opinion, and you’re sticking with it regardless of how well the angle or match actually comes off. I don’t see how one can have a different opinion on a reaction. If there’s a face pop, there’s a face pop. Willfully ignoring the crowd reaction to suit one’s own argument is another thing. It’s actually refreshing to have many of the commenters and columnists here thinking outside the box and giving this match/angle at least faint praise.

  • CB

I will say this Blair, Mark Henry > CRIMSON!

  • Blair A. Douglas

flamingwombat: What people like and see on TV is subjective. I don’t see how that Mark Henry match was better than any other Mark Henry match I’ve ever seen, except for maybe one quarter-decent spot. Mark Henry is also different than Shaemus in that he’s had 10 years to let people down, so again I ask, why would I care about seeing a guy who’s slogged ass for 10 years, and injured himself and others so many times I’ve lost count? Anyway, check out James Alsop’s post at the top of the site, that’s got my most updated stuff on this debacle.

    CB: Murphy > Crimson

Awesome write-up on a not-so-awesome match, Blair. Well done.
