WWE ’12 Roster Profile: David Otunga And Michael McGillicutty
by Travis Leamons on September 8, 2011

With today’s profile we have a pair that made their debuts on WWE’s NXT program. David Otunga was one of the first NXT rookies. Prior to stepping into a WWE ring, he became the subject of tabloid fodder and reality TV infamy appearing on the VH1 show, I Love New York 2. Since that program he’s garnered more attention as the fiance of Grammy and Academy Award-winning actress, Jennifer Hudson. Otunga may look like your average musclehead, but he’s got brains as well – earning a degree from Harvard Law School.

Sadly, the so-called “Kayne West of the WWE” is pretty bland as a wrestling personality.

The same could be said of his current tag team partner, Michael McGillicutty. He joined WWE’s NXT for season two and one would think with his background he would make the “perfect” transition. Unfortunately, this third-generation superstar (he’s the grandson of Larry “The Axe” Hennig and the son of “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig) is not quite there.

Neither competitor has shown enough to indicate that they will be with the promotion for the long haul. While Otunga and McGillicutty did take the tag titles off of Kane and The Big Show back in May on Monday Night Raw, they only had four televised title defenses including their defeat to Airboom (Evan Bourne and Kofi Kingston).

Leave it to Jerry Lawler to speak the truth when he calls them “boring.” Though you could pretty much say that about any wrestler on the lower rung of the superstar totem pole without a gimmick.

If World Wrestling Entertainment was smart, the company would play up Ortunga’s law degree and McGillicutty being Perfect’s son. It could be The Genius and Mr. Perfect for a new WWE viewing audience.

Is Otunga drunk during that entrance?

I would like to see Otunga go back to the old finishing move(Verdict). It gave him a more powerful look as one of the stronger wrestlers. It just looked better throwing the wrestler off the rope first before he power slammed them to the mat. I think David Otunga was much more convincing using a greater finisher.
