CB’s World: Brock Lesnar and Other Alternative Opponents for The Undertaker at WrestleMania 28
by CB on February 13, 2012

Oh, what could have been instead of what already is to be.

You see, now that WWE has tipped their hand and made it clear that The Undertaker will face Triple H for a second straight year at WrestleMania (and a third time overall on the granddaddy of them all), I feel that now is an appropriate time as ever to take a look at some of the other potential opponents that the Deadman could have put THE STREAK on the line against that would have been just a little whole lot more appealing to me and so many other folks I’ve talked to over the past two weeks who just don’t care all that much about Taker-HHH III:

CB’s World Presents: Other Alternative Opponents to The Undertaker at WrestleMania 28

Brock Lesnar: If Vince McMahon really wanted to make WrestleMania 28 one of the most buzzworthy events in years — and if Brock Lesnar (depending on his health status) really wanted that one final huge payday from WWE without having to go back to the company full-time — then The Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar would be a no-brainer. From their real-life mini-scuffle following one of Brock’s UFC losses to Lesnar’s meteoric rise in mainstream popularity thanks to his MMA career, this storyline would filled with interest and intrigue no matter where you look or how they book it. Throw in the fact that this would be coupled with Rock-Cena as a huge double main event and it would be Brock Lesnar’s first post-MMA-career event, and you’d have all the makings of a WrestleMania 28 match that would be a newsworthy moneymaker for all parties involved.

Batista: Dave Bautista — or Batista as he is known in the WWE lexicon — was absolutely doing his best work of his WWE career before he left the company after making his final TV appearance on Raw on May 24, 2010. The heel character that Batista cultivated and perfected before leaving was just awesome, and if Dave did want to come back either as a full-time wrestler or for a short-term stint, what better way to do so than picking up where he left off and bringing all of that heel heat towards The Undertaker? From a storyline standpoint, Batista could simply say he’s coming back to stop Taker from reaching 20-0, something he vowed he’d make sure would never happen even after he left. Undertaker can then respond in kind as to why Batista will fall like all of the rest, and from there they can just build towards the crescendo that would be their ‘Mania match.

Wade Barrett: Even though he currently has the worst collective of consecutively and constantly changing theme songs in WWE history, I actually think Wade Barrett is worthy of a high profile WrestleMania match like this that would really elevate him to another level. After all, WWE must have faith in Barrett considering they allowed him to take out Randy Orton to sell Orton’s injury, positioning Wade as a young imposing force over on SmackDown. And since Taker is never going to lose at WrestleMania, why not give Barrett the rub to show what he can do, to see how close he can come to ending THE STREAK even if he can’t succeed? I also like the idea of a guy like Barrett for this role because rather than this being the last feather in his cap of a Hall of Fame career like Triple H, it would be the beginning of something that he is trying to build at The Undertaker’s expense. One last thing that would be interesting in this scenario is that it would give WWE a reason to put Undertaker on some episodes of SmackDown since Barrett is part of the blue show, not that it really matters anymore in this Super Show era, but it would be nice to see Taker back on Friday nights every once in awhile.

Chris Jericho: While I genuinely like the Chris Jericho – CM Punk WrestleMania angle that is currently in its beginning stages, in an alternative WWE Universe I actually had this idea that maybe, just maybe, Punk’s WrestleMania 28 opponent might have been Stone Cold Steve Austin. Obviously, with Punk as the current WWE Champion there’s no way that Austin vs. Punk — or BEER vs. STRAIGHT EDGE as I like to call it — will be coming to fruition. So while this may all be a moot point for the discussion of WrestleMania 28, I thought it would be worth mentioning that I think Chris Jericho having a program with The Undertaker would actually have been a really fun feud for WWE to explore. After all, if Jericho really is the best in the world, what better way to show it than to do what Shawn Michaels and Triple H couldn’t do? In fact, since HBK is likely going to be somewhat active in the Hunter-Taker saga anyway, how cool would it have been if Jericho was in Triple H’s place so that Y2J and HBK could remind the fans of their awesome feud that they had in 2008? As for the match itself, I think Jericho and Taker would definitely make it work, and if anything a great and trustworthy mid-sized wrestler like Y2J would likely enable Undertaker to fight with that little extra spring in his step that he may not showcase against bigger, less reliable adversaries.

There are plenty of other candidates both in and out of the WWE who could have filled these shoes of The Undertaker’s WrestleMania 28 opponent — I mean there’s always STING — and so I’d like to know who your alternative opponent(s) would be for this year’s show. Sound off in the comments section below and I’ll be right there with you to respond as we continue the Road to WrestleMania.

That’s all from me — CB.

I think Undertaker should wrestle Tamina, as she tries to avenge her father’s defeat that started the streak.

LOL Limodriver. Looks like Tamina will be too preoccupied with Beth Phoenix in the match of the year this month … too bad! ;)

I think Taker should wrestle a future star like Wade Barrett because if you recall, it was Barrett’s former Nexus that took him out at Bragging Rights just over a year ago and it would be a perfect way to cement Barrett as a top heel on Smackdown.

Barrett needs some kind of rub so I think the Undertaker can be the one to give him that Wrestlemania moment while putting his streak on the line as well.On the other hand, Lesnar might be the other option as well if he does resign with the WWE.

Taker-Brock or Taker-Goldberg would have been very cool matches for this year if at all possible, I think. But in my mind, Taker-Sting is really the only “dream match” left out there that has any chance at all of happening. (I would put Cena or Punk vs. Austin out there, but I just don’t think Steve’s gonna do “one more match”)…Someone mentioned it a while back, and I don’t know if Taker is going to try for 21-0, or if Sting would be up for it next year or ever, but it would be a nice capper for both of their careers.

Nice work CB. I’m all for Sting/Taker….if this was 1999. The Sting I saw last week on Impact is NOT the Sting we all saw from the late 80′s to WCW’s demise. Sting looks like an accountant who smeared greasepaint on himself to try and be cool. His physique is completely gone. It pains me because I loved Sting as a kid but now? No. Undertaker deserves better.

  • James A

Kevin Nash is ancient, but WWE gave him a few months to get his stuff together and he came back looking as muscular as ever. Still sucked in the ring, but his physique was excellent, considering his age. Sting could be given the same treatment – dude’s a former bodybuilder – if anyone could make good use of five months being paid to work out it’s Sting.
And regardless of how much he’s slowed down in recent years, Sting would be able to work a hell of a match with Taker. Even if both guys were in their prime, the story the two would tell together would never be about athleticism – it’s about the gimmicks. What we all want is a classic, old-school clash of two of the most enduring gimmicks in pro wrestling history. For that alone, it’d be a cracker.

Great point James about it being gimmicks-driven. And if you think about it THE STREAK sells itself anyway.

I actually think a young guy would benefit from the Taker / Streak WrestleMania spotlight more than those veterans, it’s just it would be less interesting for the fans to see Barrett in the place of a Triple H. However, with HHH as a rematch this year, I’m not that interested anyway…

HAHAHA Adam! You just called Sting IRS! :)

I would take Taker-Sting over Taker-Goldberg, I must say. Besides, isn’t TNA aiming to get Goldberg vs. the undefeated Crimson? :)

  • Anonymous

Personally I think all that’s left for Undertaker is these money dream matches. After the bar was raised with these past 2 Shawn matches and last year’s HHH match, a bout against someone like Barrett or Rhodes isn’t going to fly. While I’m not on board with UT-HHH 3 yet it’s a better draw than against a youngster. The money is an outsider like Sting, Brock or Goldberg, a bout with a ghost of Christmas past (Foley, HHH, Austin, Rock or Kane) or against a “made man” that could actually cast a shadow of doubt in regards to defeating him (Jericho, Punk, Cena or Orton).

  • Mark

Both Taker-HHH Wrestlemania matches were great, but even so, I’m not excited to see it a third time. Jericho and Cena were the obvious choices from among the current roster, but with them locked up, I think Foley is the way to go. Garbage style can cover for the physical deficiencies, they have a great history and chemistry with each other, and have never faced each other at Mania. The storyline practically writes itself – Foley wants one more Mania spotlight, he wants revenge on what happened in the Cell all those years ago, and the fact that they always trumpeted how Mankind had a better win-loss record against Taker than anyone leads Foley to believe he is the one that can end the streak.

Also, anyone who thinks Taker has nothing left to offer and should retire at this Wrestlemania is a doofus.

I would LOVE Foley-Taker at Mania because a) Foley can still put on a great show in a hardcore style match; and b) They have a history worth re-exploring in a one-off situation.

  • Mike Gojira

Yeah, it’s not like I mentioned Foley/Taker in the past or anything….

  • Anonymous

Probably because you read my dream WrestleMania card in the comments section awhile back ;)

  • gorge

I agree. A young guy needs to beat Taker and spend the rest of his career bragging about it. Why give a push like that to an old dude?

  • Anonymous

I like the idea of a young guy too, as long as it’s the right guy. After all, Jericho STILL gets mileage out of beating The Rock and Stone Cold in the same night, which is awesome.

  • Wrestling Guru

a young guy would be good but there is no way that the Undertaker is going to lose at WM & it will take a hell of a wrestler to even come close to his streak as most probably wont last 20yrs in the business to even attempt it.

  • Alcohaulinass72

sting is in Impact wrestling and as for Batista or Jericho Taker defeated Batista many times Batista couldnt win without cheating and Jericho no way as for Wade Barrett hes never even been a heavyweight champ so Undertaker that would be like wiping his ass and throwing it away Lesnar is good choice but its very doubtful he’d do it as for Sting he hates Mcmahon and hassaid numerous times he’d never sign with WWE as long as Mcmahon ran or owned it.
