What the Funk? Brodus Clay pulled from WWE TV (Raw, SmackDown)
by Ralph Hardin on February 15, 2012

According to a story posted on WrestlingInc.com:

The Wrestling Globe reports that WWE officials have decided to put Brodus Clay’s “Funkasaurus” gimmick on hold for the time being. Word is that Vince McMahon feels that Clay’s ring work wasn’t where it needed to be for WWE TV.

A match against Heath Slater was cut from SmackDown a few weeks back when the decision was made that Clay needed to work on his in-ring skills.”

Ralphie’s Rant: Surely the powers that be were aware of Clay’s moveset and ring skills before they put him on TV right? And if he possesses skills other than the three moves he utilizes (and calls out), it might take more than the 45 seconds his matches have been booked to go. If it’s the gimmick that they’re getting cold feet on, have him break character in the middle of his dance routine, denounce the gimmick, and go all bad-ass on someone, like say Santino.

I still think this was a punishment gimmick for Brodus since word got out that Mark Henry’s Hall of Pain gimmick was Brodus’ idea. Vince likely thought Brodus leaked that story to make himself look good and, in retaliation, saddled Clay with a silly gimmick. Brodus got it over, at least somewhat, and Vince doesn’t like that so the in-ring excuse comes up.

If in-ring ability mattered then John Cena would never be champion. Face it, this is Vince toying with Clay.

Yeah, something doesn’t smell right here. He’s got a ridiculous gimmick, yet he’s getting it over with the fans anyway (check out the reactions and funk-related signs in the crowd if you doubt that), and he’s been booked to win a series of short squashes, yet he’s pulled for ring work?
Erm… I know WWE often puts people on TV who aren’t ring ready (Mason Ryan, etc), but this is just off… If his ring work sucks, it doesn’t matter because he’s wrestling the Goldberg formula anyway, he can keep doing that till he’s where they want him.

They kept putting him off of TV for weeks and then had him debut with full entrance regalia. He pops the crowd and has won over some “smarks” (not an easy thing to do unless your name is Punk or Jericho), and now he gets pulled because of ringwork after having been showcased in nothing but squash mathces? Something fishy going on here. Maybe he dropped a deuce in a Diva’s bag?

I really think Vince or someone high up the ladder doesn’t like this kid. I’ve been intrigued by him since I first saw him in FCW. He just has this odd look and unique mannerisms that make him stand out, whether he’s Funkasaurus or Del Rio’s henchman. And given Vince’s tendency to view big men like Viagra, something doesn’t add up.
