Wednesday Morning Backlash: WWE’s CM Punk, Chris Brown, and Stone Cold
by Aaron Glazer on February 22, 2012

I love that CM Punk is actually standing up to Chris Brown, whose unforgivable actions were immediately forgiven by the public at large, but I cannot believe Chris Brown has been dumb enough to reply. And his reply? Ad Hominem attacks on Punk for “using steroids.” A. It’s fairly absurd to accuse the Straight Edge guy of that. B. Who cares if he used steroids? You beat the living shit out of a woman! In what way, shape, or form is using steroids nearly as bad? Chris Brown will never wrestle, and if he did, it’d be kayfabe, but the guy is a giant tool.

But then, how dare wrestling fans be singing Punk’s praises given their own history with Steve Austin? Austin beat no less than 3-wives, but is still a conquering hero. Hell, I’d love to see Punk call that out since Austin so badly apparently wants to face Punk. Is it any better for Austin to have done this than Brown? If Punk fails to call out Austin in a similar manner, we’ll know just what this was – a publicity stunt that Brown played into. I hope Punk remembers that the Grammy’s didn’t go after their own guy in Chris Brown, and when they issue is WWE, that Punk himself doesn’t fall into the same trap.

Here’s Punk’s video to Brown:

The WWE has made note of it on their site. They even mentioned Brown talking about steroids. The WWE now is looking for any worldwide attention they can get so it’s possible that they’re just picking up the story, but I think it’s all a work.

Well, this kind of takes the steam of out the piece I was going to include in Friday’s article about Punk’s hypocrisy regarding Austin. But, I’m glad someone said it. I dig Punk and I’m glad he called Brown out, but just because he’s Punk doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be called on his BS.

I think the difference here is that Punk idolizes Austin and actually looked up to him when he was a lot younger, also he respects what Austin has done in the ring and would probably love to wrestle him. By talking about the fact that Austin beat his wife he’d never get his match with Austin and WWE would be pretty pissed off at him.

What do you want Punk to do, take issue with every single transgressor anywhere? I’m pretty sure that it is implied that when Punk is addressing Brown and saying what he says that it goes not just for Brown but all abusers of women. Do we know for certain Punk never confronted Austin on it?

For that matter what right do wrestling fans have even CONSIDERING criticizing Punk on this, when we allow wrestlers to literally kill themselves for our amusement? There are more than a couple IWC members who to this day memorialize Chris flippin’ Benoit in their hearts, if not in their typed words.

Adam, sorry, but that’s nuts. No one is implying that he needs to take issue with every one everywhere, but you’d think he’d at least speak openly about Austin, who is in Punk’s business, doing it, before he would consider talking about Chris Brown… or at the very least, maybe don’t openly speak so fondly of Austin, a woman-beater, before you go OUTSIDE your profession to find someone else who does it.

I think Adam makes a good point – we don’t know that Punk has never spoken to Austin about Austin’s sinister history with women. I doubt he has, personally, but none of us can know anything for sure other than that he’s never said anything in public. Which is probably (sadly) a wise career move.

We’re all missing the point, I think. Punk should be applauded for making a stand against Brown. It’s more than anyone in the music biz seems to have done. It takes a lot of balls to do that. Just because Punk isn’t calling out Austin for his spurious past, or Ted DiBiase, Edge and Bret Hart out for their extra-marital affairs, or Randy Orton for the sports-bag incident, or Vince McMahon for… well… everything, that doesn’t make Punk a hypocrite.

I think a big part of it was Brown’s retort to Punk in the first place, and the fact that Brown acts ridiculously childish on Twitter and generally all the time. Instead of acknowledging the fact that he was wrong and was fortunate to have another chance, he has used his Grammy Award as a means to “silence the haters”.

He could have been gracious and cordial and accepted his award with dignity but instead he is flaunting it and indirectly using it as justification for his actions. My guess is the combination of those things contributed to Punk wanting to put him in his place. But no one knows for sure except Punk.

  • Geno

I guess my point was that Punk probably has more respect for Austin and appears to have little to no respect for Brown.

It’s one thing to do horrible things, there are lots of people who have done horrible things, and probably regret them. But to dismiss people who criticize you about those things as “haters” is another level of despicable, which implies that you don’t regret those actions.

  • http://twitter.com/BlairADouglas Blair A. Douglas

Fair points – BUT Punk has always said he’s looked up to Austin and has always spoken highly of him as well. I’m not saying he needs to call Austin out per se, but for him to keeping doing that and THEN come back on Brown for the same thing is a bit silly.

Chris Brown is a dick who beats up women and who never apologized. Steve Austin is also a dick who beats up women and who also never apologized. I’m glad Punk called out Chris Brown. I just have a hard time completely buying into his whole crusade.

  • Limodriver

I don’t know if this completely justifies it, but to my knowledge Austin’s domestic abuse problems have never been widely reported. Those of us who follow the backstage talk know about it, but I bet most wrestling fans don’t. Or maybe they do, I could be wrong.

But the Chris Brown abuse was highly visible and public. Whether it should be or not, that makes it a bigger deal. If Austin beats up on women in the privacy of his home, that’s a terrible thing for those victims. But when Chris Brown does it and it becomes part of his public image, the damage is greater.

  • Chris

To be completely fair, isn’t your implicated attack on Chris Brown also an Ad Hominem attack? If you are going to act logical then don’t be inconsistent.
